Journal #22: Dreams Chapter 4

Part 1
In discussing his struggle to understand his racial identity, Obama explains:

"... the only thing you could choose as your own was withdrawal into a smaller and smaller coil of rage, until being black meant only the knowledge of your own powerlessness, of you own defeat" (84)

  • What does he mean? Why does he use this language?
  • Have you ever felt this way? Explain.
  • DRAW the image of his feelings.
Part 2 Obama uses imagery and metaphor to explain a powerful feeling:
"a smaller and smaller coil of rage"
  • Think of a time you have felt a powerful emotion"
      • ex., anger, sadness, joyfulness, excitement, fear
    • Come up with a creative way to express this feeling
      • ex., metaphor, simile, imagery, personification
    • DRAW the image of your feeling
