Journal #23: Current American Societal Mores

Part 1
Your family is getting ready to host a foreign exchange student. You must teach him/her what is "normal" for American -- how to behave so they will not be seen as "different."

  • What do you teach them?
  • What do you tell them about?
  • Think about: greets, dress, manners, conversation, gestures, relationships, shopping, grooming, visiting another home
Part 2
  • Are there different sets of rules for different people in American society?
  • Consider what the "overall expectations" are for the following groups - be conscious of stereotypes, but be honest
    • also consider how these expectations may change over generations

      • Muslim
      • teens
      • handicapped
      • Latino
      • LGBT
      • elderly
      • black
      • Asian
      • smart
      • rich
