Blog Post #2: Themes in Fahrenheit 451

A theme is a main message of a work of literature. The message may be about life, society, or human nature (typical behavior of humans). We will be focusing on the following thematic Essential Questions as we continue our first unit:
  • Should you do what is safe or what is right?
  • How do you stay true to yourself in the face of society's pressures and expectations?
  • What is the price of complacency (not doing anything)?  Or, what is the price of standing up for yourself?
Use evidence (examples) from the passages we have read to support your response.  (If you identify another theme, you may discuss that instead, as long as you use evidence.)

  2. I think you should do what is right, because if you see someone held at gun point are you just going to stand there and watch or call the cops?
You stay true to yourself in the face of society's pressure and expectations by being yourself not who others want you to be.If you want to wear a costume to school even though its not halloween who cares? be yourself. It Doesn't matter what they society thinks everyone is human. The price of complacency is however you feel you want to be saw and how your satisfied with yourself.

  3. I think you should do what's right instead of being afraid of the consequences later. If you don't do what's right it might make you feel guilty later on . In the story Montag has to choose to do what's right or listen to society. Montag chooses to do what's right because he feels like something is missing and he feels people are unhappy. Faber let bad things happen and he didn't try to change it but he felt bad later on about it so now he is trying to get Montag to help him so they can make a change .

  4. I think that you should do what is right instead of trying to play safe. You stay true to yourself by not letting the society get in your way or you can just ignore what the society say.The price of you standing up for yourself is you can get killed or the society can lock you up. The connection is when Montag stole the books and Beatty seeing them and telling himself,Mildred and Montag that Montag was just curious about the book.

  5. Honestly I think it depends on the situation because majority if the time you should do what's right, even though some people don't. I love to do what's right however I think the question as written is very subjective because different people perceive things differently. For example in the book ultimately What was right to Montag was for people to be able to see what was inside of books to make them want to read. However in the beginning he was doing what he thought was safe and what was right by not reading books, but even his own position changed. I stay true to myself in the face of society's pressure and expections by being me, unless it involves harming myself then I will do it I never cared about what people thought. When you're complacent it's taking the easy way out but its not always good because if you don't stand up for yourself then people will get over on you but sometimes standing up for yourself is not always safe because some people might look at you in a negative way and it can end badly.

  6. In my Opinion I think you should do what's right and not what's safe. I mean being safe is Great in all but being at peace with yourself is safe it fearing what society will do , but for some situations people look at it different but ill rather die over something I believe in then sit back and watch like a coward. For example when montag stole the book and looked at it was not safe but he need to know something told him he needed to know and he felt that was best for him to do, yes it wasn't safe being in the society he lives in but sometimes facing society is the best thing you could ever do.

  7. I think a fine line between what safe of right. Sometimes what the safe thing to do is not always the right thing to do. In the passage when it says when the women talk about there husband. " Oh they came and go." " quick war." Should they do what is right or stay home and be there for there wives.

  8. I believe that people should do whats right because when you dont follow your mind you end up resenting what is important. For example in the story, Faber stood by and watched what he believed in being disrespected which he later regret doing. So even though Faber and Montag has no idea what is going to be a result of their actions they follow what they think is right. Sometimes with rules comes consequences if not followed, but not everything is morally right, and sometimes we as people should follow our heart because that is what people respect the most, which later causes amazing iconoclosts.

  9. I think that you should do what is right over what is safe. Doing the right thing is better than what is safe in my mind because if you see a child getting kidnapped are you going to do what is safe and stand there or will you do what is right and help out? This is why I believe you should do mhat is right instead of what is safe. This connects the Fahrenheit 451 because montag decides to do what is right instead of what is safe because he went out on a limb in order to find out more about books. He chose to do what he believed was right instead of what was safe.

  10. I think you should always do what is right no matter the circumstance. It Is certain times to be safe and to do what is right. Being safe is taking the easy way out therefore you are not controlling your own mind in a way. If you do what is right then you will have to think for yourself and become free for a certain amount of seconds or however long it takes you. For example, Montag steals the lady's book from her home. He knows that it is the safe thing to do because he could lose everything but in his state of mind, he wants to do what he thinks is right an what he thinks is right it being able to read books, hence opening up his mind and being a leader, not a follower.

  11. I think you should do what you believe in. If what you believe in is not safe nor is it right, you should still do it. It isn't always easy to stay true to yourself in the face of society's pressures and expectations. I think you have to believe in what you are doing and know what you stand for as an individual. Set your own expectations and pressure yourself to stay true to them. The price for standing up for what you believe in can sometimes turn out for the best or in other ways it can kill you. Morally or emotionally you should feel good no matter what the turn out is, as long as you stood up for what you believe is the right thing. In Fahrenheit 451, Montag had to choose between what was right and what was safe. He knew reading was against the law but that was something he grew to believe in. In passage 4, Montag read some poetry to Mildred and her friends. Mildred got upset, Mrs.Phelps got mad and threatened to never return to the Montag's house hold and Clara started crying. There responses to Montag reading are unsafe because they can tell on him and get him punished, but he still read because he think it is the right thing to do.

  12. You should do what us right cause then at the end of the day you have your own respect you don't have to care what anyone else thinks. You stay true to your self by knowing what you will and won't do and not changing that for anyone the price of complacency is acceptance and the price of standing up for your self is being put under a microscope for being different

  13. After reading this passage, I noticed the use of the first theme of doing what is safe or what is right. On the third page, Montag becomes really upset about the idle conversation between Mildred and her friends. The narrator said, "But Montag was gone and back in a moment with a book in his hands."(Passage 4) For the last few days, Montag has been wondering what is wrong with society, and it's the lack of books. Montag wants everyone to read a book and stop living a lie. Montag has had it with his wife's friends, so he goes and gets the book he stole to price to them what they ate missing. This choice Montag made was the right thing to do, but he has put himself and his wife in danger of losing their home.

  14. I think you should do what benefits you. It comes in different circumstance what you should. If something your doing is wrong and its not worth what bad your doing, do what's right. I stay true to myself whenever I'm in different expectations that I don't want to be in by being humble and whatever I'm going to do at the end of the day benefits me and my life in the future, because certain things you do in the past makes you wonder in the future why I did that. I think this relates to passage 4 because it shows the way people look at society and what you say can affects someone thinking in life. The price of standing up for yourself is a lot of courage and bravery to stand in front of a lot of people that are against you, still stand tall no matter what.

  15. I think you should do what is right verses to what is safe. Sometimes the safest thing could be the most dangerous. You should follow your mind because we all have been taught right from wrong. I stay true to my self by remembering who I am. I tell myself that I am my own person and no one can change me. Even when society presurres you to be something, you should be comfortable in your own skin. Sometimes standing up for yourself could bring people to bring you down. People will always try to kill your joy, but you should not let them.
In Fahrenheit 451, Montag stood up for what he believed in, and in the end, no one was on his side. The passage says, " What 've you got there ; isn't that a book? " Here in this part of the passage, Montag is showing the ladies a book which is not allowed. He is standing for what he believes in, but in the end no one was by his side.

  16. In my opinion, it depends on the situation. But, using the novel Fahrenheit 451 I would and I would'nt do the right thing.Nothing materialistic is worth losing your life for. But, unlike Montag I wouldn't just watch innocent victims be killed over something so mindless and petty such as disposals of old books. Throughout life there are going to be many obstacles you must overcome and many curves you have to avoid and changes you have to make. But, In order to stay true to yourself through it all, you must be yourself at all times. Never let anyone or anything dictate your beliefs or your happiness. If you feel strongly about something there should be no price or consequence. Have no regrets and grow from your mistakes. Learn life!

  17. At the end of reading passage #4 , the theme is "doing what is safe and what is right" To me you should do what ever makes you happy and whatever you believe in , however you should make your decisions wisely. This is sort of what Montag is doing in this scene. Montag released to Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles that he had a book so now he was stuck in confusion. Faber on the other hand convinced Montag to go along with Mildred suggestion and Montag made the right decision to agree with her. This shows that in their society you have to do more of the right thing than of what you want to do because you'd rather be safe than sorry.

  18. I do not believe in conformity, but I do believe in the law. Personally, I feel as though you should do what is safe. If society sets a standard for people to follow, it's best to follow it. "Staying true to yourself" is not a universal code of conduct for people that follow the law. Take for example, the government. Everyone has their own individual opinion on the government's decisions and such, and some may disagree with their actions and choices, but we still must follow what they say. No one wants to wait for the green light to cross the street, but if you were to do that and it caused an accident, you'll end up in jail. So much for "staying true to yourself".

In Passage 4, Montag reveals a book to the women and begins criticizing them on their failure to realize the truth in books. He stood up for what he believed in despite the law. However, in the end, he was forced to play it off after Faber threatened to cut all ties from him. Montag stayed true to himself but in the end, he followed the law. Unfortunately, things still did not end well for him.

  19. I believe that you should do the right things because being safe sometimes isn't the the motive into solving problems. When playing it safe, you're not really getting what you desire which really counts. When faced with society's pressures and expectations, you have follow what your mind is telling you to do.If your mind is telling to tell other people the truth hidden in books that goes against the law,so be it because your mind is telling you to do the right thing rather than playing it safe.Consequences will be as they are but they can't really stop you from doing the right way.For example, Montag shared a book of truths with the women who were friends of Mildred. The women were saddened by the emotion of the poetry of Montag's book. This means that Montag showed out a piece of poetry that the women had never heard before which gets them riled up.Standing up for yourself makes you lose supporters and be on an issue that you really want to share out on by yourself. For example, when Montag told Mildred about the burned woman and how he had a stash of books to show that he was serious on the issue,Mildred started to not think about that and only care for Montag's health that wasn't really supprting him to Montag.

  20. I think you should do what is right because if Montag never read those books to the women then she would not have cursed him out and he would not have had to tell her to leave. You should do what's right because even though you're trying be safe you can get hurt at the same time

  21. i think in our society today it is better to do the thing that is safe because you don't know what could happened and you can look up and be dead from trying to do the right thing . i would rather stay safe. in order stay true to your self you must not let society change you , you can't be a follower you have to be a leader. If you see the whole world going right you have to go left. the price of standing up for yourself is that you can look like an outcast and not have any friends .

    ReplyDelete
  22. My personal opinion is you should always do what is right instead of playing it safe. You are supposed to stay true to yourself and not do what society feels. But you also have to keep in mind that there are rules set and you have to be wise about your actions. As for Montag in the novel I believe he can read books and try to persuade others to give books a chance but he must be ready for all consiquences. The way Montag will go about it he must be careful when expressing his feelings to others. In the end if he doesn't feel what is right he will end up growing old and regreting the things he did in life, unhappy with his actions such as Faber. Faber who had a chance to step up and speak out on his beliefs when books were first tooken away but he didn't. The result of that was he grew old thinking of himself as a coward abd unhappy. Therefore, this is why I believe you should do what you think is right.

  23. I think that you should do whats right instead of being safe .Because you should always do the right thing especially if its something that you believe instead of doing what society wants you to do. For example when montag didnt know if he wanted to show mildred friend a book or not he didnt know if he should play it safe and not show her or do whats right and show her and let her know what society is. hidding.

  24. I think you should do whats right because you should go for what you believe in and don't care what other people say or do to go against your goal in life. You stay true to yourself by going by what you think and know whats right and staying on the track you made from you decisions, also how when you have an idea you don't let nobody change what you say towards the situation and or problem even a topic. The price of standing up for yourself is now knowing that you stood your ground with whatever you were against like society. Also having your ideas out might change the way people think of the society and the ways they do things. You might go to jail or even get tracked down. There a limited amount of prices.

In passage 4 , Montag starts to read the poem "Dover Beach" and he knows that he is not suppose to have a book on him and especially if he is around Millie and her girlfriends. As he read it Ms.Phelps began to cry but couldn't explain why. Then Ms.Bowles starts to get mad at Montag and was sure about what she was about to prove. How poetry causes tears, suicide, awful feelings, and sickness. Montag plays it off as though he was playing and put in in the fire. Next Ms.Bowles yelled I'm going home. Finally Montag couldn't hold it in and he snapped. He said what was right he told her all the wrongs she did like how she divorced her first husband and her second husband had been killed in a jet and her thirst husband blew his brains out. He keeps going on and asked her Go home and think how it all happened and what did you ever do to stop it. He went with Faber's plan but it still didn't work out as it was suppose to be.

  25. I think you should do what is safe over what is right. In my opinion doing what is safe can protect you from unneccisary problems. You can stay true to youself by sticking to what you believe in regardless of other influences. Based on the situation the price of standing up for youself varies. Example, Montag stood up what is right by defending the books against Mildred's friends. I wouldn't of did that. I would of kept my mouth shut and played it safe. The ladies could of said something to the authorities and I could of got locked up. The Overall Theme of this passage is " Play it safe and/or do what's right ".

I believe that you should always do what is safe no matter if it is right or wrong because at the end of the day you still have life to live. But in "Fahrenheit 451" montag is doing what he think is right and not thinking about what is safe because he know it's bad consequences to his actions. In the book it says "what've you got there;a book isn't ?" this right here proves that montag doesn't care about safety because he is pulling out a book that isn't allowed knowing there can be bad consequences.

  27. In this passage montag had to choose between doing what was right and doing what's safe. Montag decided to read the Mildred's friends a book. Books aren't allowed and people don't believe in them so this was a dangerous move. Montag feels strongly about changing his society and using books to do so, using the book to read the poetry wasn't a warning sign for Montag, he was too wrapped in trying to make things right. Now that Montag has revealed that he has books in his home he put his wife and himself in danger but none of that matters because making the society open there eyes and read is more important to Montag at the moment.

  28. It just seems that when you try to do whats right it always back fire's on you. So some just stay away frome the heat. But others do want to do something, thr inly thing is they want to do it without getting hurt. So after reading passage #4 it just goes to show tgat you van have someone likr Montag be true to himself and tell Mildred friends about the true. Or he can go back to ghr normal laws to protect himself. So overall he was trying to stay true ,but fear got in the way.

  30. I think that you should do what feels best in your heart.  Never feel wrong for the way you feel.  The best way to stay true to yourself is by ignoring people's irrelevant comments. Society needs to understand that there are different personalities.  People that judge want you to follow the stupid crowd. There is no price for standing up for yourself. What ever you believe in, take it and stand behind it 100%. Be strong about who you are and your beliefs. In relation to the novel, Montag reading poetry would seem like the worst thing to do. Mildred and Mrs. Phelps were very upset at him. But he didn't care, I he likes to read. They explain to him that are consequences, but he continues because it feels right to him. Do what feels good to you and no one else."

  31. you should do what is right. you choose what you believe even when others are talking bad about it. Montag of hearing the woman calling poetry jibber so he spoke up of what he believed was right. he red from the book and the woman cried and for the first time of her life she actually felt amotions but wouldn't accept it and thats her lost.

  32. The price of complacency is a life of guilt and a life full of "what ifs". You would feel guilty that you didn't get your point across and or try to save what you felt was important to you and fight for what you really believed in. However, when you stand up for yourself you would feel good at heart and you would feel like you did a good deed for yourself and others. Faber is a great example of this. He sat back and didn't say anything as the world was slowly becoming blind to the importance of books. A coward. A coward is what he called himself for sitting by not saying anything or standing up for what he really loved. To stay true to yourself in the face of society's pressures and expectations is to be yourself and fight for your right and for what you believe in.

  33. I believe we should all do what is right, because at the end of the day your following what your mind, body and heart says to do. It leads to a learning habit and knowing that your doing the right thing that is also good at the same time. That's goes to show when Montag went to Faber's house to show him the book (bible) and ask him more about books. Faber thought it was the right thing to do because he feels as though Montag wants to gain more knowledge from these books and even from him, he's not like the other firemen. It shows that Montag really cares about the society & why they aren't happy, that's why he paid close attention to Faber's lists of things missing in life and history on certain books.

  34. i believe everyone should do what they think is right because it what you believe montag read the book only because he wanted to show the ladies that it is more to life than just television the good stuff is in books and that they should read instead of doing what society say is right they live in a world with just television which is not right they should read poetry just like montag said you might like it he wants them to stand with him not against him I believe he did the right thing

    ReplyDelete
  35. I believe that everyone should do what right, because its always important to stay true to yourself. But there is a time and place to do what's right. When Montag read the poem to the ladies he did it because he believed that he should do what he think is right and what he believes in. Although he stayed true to himself, he didn't approach the problem the way he should've, he should've did it at a different time. Faber felt as though Montag was doing the wrong thing by not being safe and going though with their original plan. Faber was paying the price of complacency by just sitting around for years and not doing anything about it. And that's the reason he was willing to stop the plan with Montag because he's not use to standing up for himself. And Montag paid the price of standing up for himself and that price was his "family", but it was all worth it in the end because the world has a chance to rebuild its self. Over all I believe Montag did the right thing, by doing what he thought was right but he should've just found the right time to discuss it.

  36. I believe that depending on the situation a person would have to chose to what is right or what is safe or if what is right is the safe action. The way i stay true to myself in society is by choosing what is right and thinking of if my decision will benefit all or back fire. i try not to deviate from what i think is best but i don't close myself to new ideas. One price of complacency is that you have to change your ideas and morals witch could be worse off for you like sharing a house with some one who does not pay rent. The price of standing alone is that you will have to operate on your own with no help and no new ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think you should do what is right no matter what type of trouble you can get for instant when Montag read the poem to the women he done something that felt right and not what felt safe cause if would have done something that felt safe to him he wouldn't have done that cause he know he know he's not allowed to have books In the town he lives in.you stay true to yourself in the face of society by doing what you feel is right to you and not what society says cause if you always listen to what society says your not being true to your self because your just following after one says like in f451 society says that not allow to have books nor able to read from them but Montag feels as if he should have them and read cause he wants a better understanding on what happiness is.The price of standing up for yourself can cost you a lot like friends family jobs or even your home for instant when Montag stood up to the women and pulled the book out to read poem making cleara cry was his way to stand up to women and also when he was telling the women off about what they do is wrong was costing his wife Mildred of losing friends and not wanting to come back over was away Montag stood up for his self .

  38. The question I choose to answer is "Do you do what's safe or what"s right?" It think you should do a little of both, I also think you should do what right but still safe. It also depends on the situation a person is in because what's right isn't always safe for that situation. a person has to think would "what's right" hurt or benefit the situation. I try to always do what right even thought that isn't always the best thing to do but I believe a person should always say what they feel or what's on their mind no matter the situation.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think you should do whats right and whats safe depending on the situation. Somethimes you can do the right thing but then think is this safe for me. It can be good in one way and not the other. For example when Montag stole the old lady book he knew it was the right thing because that's his job that's what he have to do but was it safe for him, did he have consequences after doing that or a neagtive outcome.

  40. I think that you should do what is right . Sometimes you just have to back away and let things happen . You should not try to be a superhero because your plan can backfire .Also doing what make you safe I'd the best way because you should always protect yourself first . At the the end of the day all you have is yourself. In the passage montag choose to do what's right and in doing that he had to run from other firemen and the people in the sky looking for his safety to stay alive. He out others in danger for the books to be safe. Montag realized that outing yourself in danger would make more people realize that books are important but at the end he just had to hide himself and his books. Montag has me a lose lose situation and if he just would have stayed out of it he would not have a big mess in his Plate to clean up .

  41. Staying true to yourself in this society is extremely hard, but I know that it is possible. If you truly want to do something, or don't want to do something, then just don't. Don't feed into "popularity" or do what everyone else is doing, because then you'll just blend in. If you stay true to yourself, you'll be very unique in society, and people may not want to accept that, but no matter what, it's what you want to do and not what others want you to do. Like in the book, it seems as if Mildred just wants to fit in, but, after meeting the little girl, Montag, on the other hand, wants to stick out. He wants to read and find out more because that's who he is. He's curious, so I think that you should be true to yourself no matter what. Even if it costs you everything in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The question I choose is the cause of standing up for yourself and the cost of not doing anything I like standing up for my self because it might get worse in the begging in the end it pay off. Rosa Parks for a example stand up for her rights. But not doing anything is bad because you will feel like its your fault for not standing up for yourself

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think you should always do what is right, because even if it may not feel good, good things will have to come back to you. Even though doing whats right has consequences, some consequences just might be worth the trouble because your not the only one that benefits from doing whats right. The price you pay for not doing the right thing is lying and disappointing yourself and those that believe and look up to you. Even when you try to think of a safer option it may not matter, because it may not have the right impact it would have had if a person did it the first time.

    1. I think that you always should do what is right because in the end its gonna help you a lot. No matter how much the actions consequences are to the problem in the end you are standing up for your rights. It takes a lot of courage to stand up in what you believe in and if you just sit by and let the same stuff keep happening without you saying anything what will that change. The many reasons why we are able to do the things we do today is because of courage for the right thing to do. In all, if you stand up for yourself and others and things you care about it can really change our outcomes about the way things are looked at.

  44. Personally I am a firm believer, that one should do what is right rather than what is safe. Not everything that is done is supposed to be done with safety in mind. Some things call for one being risky, but also saying and doing what is right for the occasion. In order to stay true to yourself, you must stand up for what is right and do what you see fit in certain situations. In passage four of Fahrenheit 451, Montag has decided to take a stand against his job of being a fireman. The society in Fahrenheit are facing oppression. Instead of Montag playing things "safe" he decides to do whats right in his mind, and rebel against society. Although the society in Fahrenheit was oppressed, Montag risked his life for his beliefs. This connects to standing up for ones beliefs, because it demonstrates how Montag stood up for not only himself, but also certain individuals in the society. The price of standing up for ones beliefs sometimes runs the risk of ruining the image of an individual. However not standing up for ones beliefs could also hinder how the world operates. Imagine a world where everyone played things safe rather than actually doing whats right.

  45. Doing what's right is the best thing to do because to me Morals come before safety, but sometimes in certain circumstances you have to do what is safe to protect you and the others around you. M.L.K Jr. is a good example of doing what is right over what is safe. He spoke up in a oppressive society, and that wasn't safe because he and his family were attacked multiple times but he keep fighting because he knew what he was doing was right and that it would better the lives of many people. The price for complacency is clear. If you stand by and watch something happen, that thing is just going to happen, whether you want it to or not. When you stand up for yourself your letting your voice be heard, but that also comes with consequences, people might do whatever it takes to quiet the voice that speaks because that one voice could spark a out burst.

  46. In order to stay true to yourself you must make your own decisions. You have to do what's right to you, what's right may not be what's safe but it's what you think. Montag stayed true to himself in passage 5. Mildred had invited her friends over and you could see the difference from their society and ours. The women talked about being mothers, they really proved in this passage that anyone can be a mom but not everyone could be a mother. Somehow, through all this chaos Montag gets angry and decides to read a book of poetry to the women. Bradbury writes,"Montag,'Faber's voice scraped away at him.'You'll ruin everything. Shut up, you fool!". Faber is trying to explain to Montag that he should back off. This here shows Montag staying true to himself and doing what is right! He's doing what will make him live without regrets even if it does cause trouble.

  47. I believe I should do what is right because the more you keeping fighting for what is right, eventually it will be a better outcome; "Hard work pays off". Always do what your heart to tells you do or what you believe in. To exemplify, Montag stood up for what is right, after knowing the background of books, which lead him to a bigger risk. In the face of society's pressures and expectations you stay true to yourself by leading others and never giving up no matter consequences; like how Ghandi led his people when his people was beginning to give up, he motivated them. The price of doing nothing or standing for yourself can effect the future either in a negative way or a positive way. However, in the novel Fahrenheit 451, their society is so corrupted its to late to fix it. So, Montag, standing up for himself, does have a price to pay because he is risking every possession that he owns.

You should do what is right because it's good to stand up for something you believe in. You can stay true to yourself in the face of pressure because you shouldn't let other people make do something you don't want to do. The price of complacency is seeing something happen you don't want but not speaking up for it so it happens.

  49. You should do what is safe, til you can what is right. Because if you want things to change you have to be smart about your plan, basically you need to have the right approach. See Montag had the wrong approach when he was trying to get people to listen to his problem. He knew it was right but his plan back fired, because of his approach on the situation. The only way you can stay true to yourself is if you become an outcast, because if your doing the total opposite of what society is doing that's what you'll look like. When your complacent about an issue you just start to resent yourself and just become unhappy. Faber was complacent about not sticking up for books when he had a chance to, so now he just sits in the house a scary old many accepting that books are gone. Well at least til Montag showed up to stand up for them and now he gains a little bit of hope that maybe they can save books. When you stand up for yourself you run a chance of still not getting what you want or you might it all depends, but a step is better than no step at all rather its good or bad.

  50. In my opinion, I think you should do what is right. I say this because if you just do what is safe then you aren't really solving the problem or doing anything to fix the problem. If you do what is right at least you know you tried and attempted to do the right thing and fix what was wrong. The way you stay true to yourself amongst all the pressure society is putting on you is to just do what you know is right. Do what you feel is right and dont just stand around and keep quiet when you see something going wrong because if you keep quiet the problem may just keep getting bigger and bigger and never go away. I think the price of standing up for yourself is risky and comes with consequences but its a risk the everyone should be willing to take. Everyone has the right to freedom if speech and when you dont use that right for all the RIGHT reasons then you are part of the problem. If you aren't helping fix the problem the you mine as we'll be apart of the problem.

  51. Normally you should do what is safe...because if not then you put yourself and maybe others in harms way. Montag put himself and his wife in danger by making the women aware of his stash of books. It wasn't safe, but it was the right thing to do. However in situations such as protests, if you have a group of people doing "what is right" for example by disobeying with the government or the like then in that case you should do what is right. However, I believe when you're working alone in doing something that society does not tolerate, then do what's safe. One stays true to themselves by having a mentality that can put them through tough times.During the times of racial segregation, African Americans were faced with severe public pressure and low expectations yet they strived and paved the way for most of us today. As for Guy Montag, he did not care about what society thought of books, as he believed he was one of the only ones who understood their true meaning. The price of not doing anything could lead to constant suffering...The price of standing up for yourself could sometimes be even worse as it leads to harsher consequences. This was the case for Guy Montag, as the police were on his tail for his defiance.

  52. I chose the question should you do what is safe or what is right. I believe you should do what is right. If you do what is right maybe one day that could change society. Montag did what was right in the book and he is now suurounded by a group of peopl who want to change their society and multple is better than one. MLK did what was right look at society now our country is the most diverse country in the world.

  53. I think you should always do what's right because covering up and hiding it because you scared of what society would think is not being true to yourself it is risky but you have to deal with it just like if a old lady is getting robbed you should help her because it's the right thing to do even if you thinking of consequences but the guilt won't be on your shoulders that you sat there and let it happened you helped somebody , and speaking out & doing what's right can also help a lot of people agree on what they been thinking & maybe they were afraid to even say it but since someone said it then they feel free

  54. I think in society today it is better to do what is the right thing than the wrong thing because if u do what other people want you to do it is like giving into peer pressure. You should do whats right even if no one is doing it and you should not do what is wrong even if everyone is doing it. The price of not doing anything in my opinion can actually be good and bad because if you're not doing anything people wont hold you for it because they dont know but if you do something and if it turns negative you will be the one to blame. Standing up for yourself can actually help be more respected which you need.

  55. Staying true to yourself takes a lot to do but it's possible as long as you remember what you're in this world for. I think that's it's natural instinct to go ahead and follow what everyone else is doing but in the end you'll see if that thing is right for you or not, that's when you'll decide if people need to see something else, probably more valuable just like Montag in F451, he decided that what the people in the society are doing is wrong and that he needs to take a stand and fight to stay true to his self and beliefs towards the concept of books in the society.

    ReplyDelete
  56. What is right, because things always tend to even out at the end of the day. and you feel better when you do the right things. The cost of you staying true to yourself in the face of society, by keep believing in what you think is good. And not just having a negative opinion about something just cause everyone else does. The price of not doing anything will leave you to become apart of all failure, such as mildred in '' fahrenheit 451 '' she avoided all the bad things that was happeing not doing anything to make there world a better place, makes her apart of the failure in there world.

  57. I believe that you should do what you feel is right. When you don't follow your mind and stand up for yourself you would feel like a coward. Society will put pressure on you and try and stop you from achieving your goal but you must believe in your self, remain focused, and work hard. Martin Luther King Jr. had a vision for african americans to live better, for everyone to have equal rights, and he even fought for laws to be changed. Look what happened to him when he stood up for what was right. He made a change. The price you might pay if you don't do what is right is that you will live in fear and be depressed. Like I said you will feel like a coward. -Bahsil

  58. I would do what is right. Doing what is right is usually the safe thing to do. You should always stay true to yourself in the face of society's pressure by doing what you believe in and not have to take what other say you should do. The price of complacency is being put down by other and setting yourself up to be bullied. For example Montag kept the books hidden because that was the right thing to do although it was not safe for him. The books contain knowledge and knowledge is power.

  59. I think you should do what's right because you should stand up for what u believe in. The only way you can stay true to your self by not letting anyone tell you who you can and can not be. Like in the passage Montag does stop learning how to read because the society wants him to, also he doesn't let Mildred, Mrs. Phelps, and Mrs. Bowels stop him from doing what he think is right. If you stand up for yourself then that means you your not afraid to show who you really are.

  60. In my opinion I believe you should do what is right. Taking risk is what life is about if we don't express how we feel because it's not safe, are we really living? Staying true to your self should always come first weather others agree or not. In the passage Montag does what he believes is right although it isn't safe. Because of this he is faced with the consequence of not being able to return home. For every risk we take and every stand against society there will always be a consequence, but doing what you believe to be right should concur the need to conform. Not speaking out on something you feel strongly about can cause conflict within yourself and if you aren't doing anything your only making the problem worse. Montag demonstrates that societies expectations should never come before what you feel is right. Although he we punished for speaking out about books he still stayed true to himself and that's all that matters.

  61. I think you should do what safe for you, because always doing the thing does not always keep you safe. Once your safe you know everything is alright. Sometimes it is always good to do what is right too, because doing what's right can also lead you into being safe in some situations. For example in the novel Fahrenheit 451, books were not allowed but some people still were using them going against society. The women in the novel was going against society and was not doing what was right, which leading into her dying. That's why sometimes it id good to do what is right so that you can be safe.

  62. I believe you should always do what's right. However, there are times where you just have to play it safe. It all depends on the situation. For example, when Montag read the poem to the ladies, or even showed them the book he stole, he only wanted to do that because he believed it was the right thing to do. But, that wasn't the safest thing nor the wises thing to do knowing having a book is against their society rules. The reason that books are basically illegal in their society is because it basically show's how life is. The passage we read last night was a perfect example, after Montag read the poem, one of the women cried because it reminded her of her own life. Right, after that Mrs. Bowles gave Montag a lecture of why he should have followed the rules and how much trouble he is going to be in since he went against them. Lastly, the price of complacency is basically having regretting not doing anything for the rest of your life. A great example of this would be if someone dreamed of joining the military, but was too scared to go. When they get older they might hate themselves for the rest of their life because they never did what they wanted to do because they were too cowardly.

  63. I think you should always stay true to yourself because if not then who will you really stay true too. For example when Montag read that poem to the women, he wanted to show them what was important to him. When he read it , it also showed that he didn't care what people thought about him didn't matter. When he read it , it wasn't quite the right time to explain how he felt.

  64. The question I chose was "Do you do whats safe or whats right?" I think that it could be either or because if you choose to do whats right, you might be changing people lives and mindset all around you that may want to follow your lead and make a change. This could also be bad because there are consequences that comes along with doing whats right that others might not approve of. If you choose to do whats safe your taking the easy way out and your voice will never be heard or things that you dont like may stay the same. On the other hand, if you choose doing whats safe it may benefit you from not facing the consequences that involves standing up for yourself and stating in what you believe in.

  65. I think you should do what's right even though you're going to get judged. Also, I think you should do what's right instead of being afraid of the consequences later. In my opinion, people shouldn't be afraid of doing what's right just because someone made fun of you. I think you should do what you believe in. Even if it's not safe, you should still do it. I believe that an individual should set their own expectations and should stick to them. The price for standing up for what you believe in can sometimes be a good thing or it could lead into something bad. I think that no matter what the outcome is, whether it's good or bad, you should still feel good about yourself because at the end of the day, you still did the right thing. In Fahrenheit 451, Montag had to choose between what was right and what was safe. He knew that reading books was against the law but books were something that he believed in and knew that there were more to it than just words on paper. In passage #5, Montag read a piece of poetry to his wife Mildred and her friends. When he was finished, Mildred got upset, Mrs. Phelps started crying, Mrs. Bowles got mad and threatened to never return to the Montag's house. Montag reading to the women was unsafe because they can tell on him and get him punished, but he still read the poetry because he think it is the right thing to do.

  66. I think you should do what's right because if you somebody getting jumped or held at gun point why would you just stand there & watch or not say anything or tell someone & get help. If you stand there & watch or don't say anything you'll have a guilty conscience. What if that person got beat to death or shot dead because no one helped how would you feel. If that was you would want someone to help you out. But then again sometimes it can be dangerous getting yourself involved because the attacker could come for you as well but I'm the type of person that would take that risk. I would feel so bad.

  67. I believe that you should do what's right because it's healthy and spiritual as to being yourself. Also, making the right choices and fighting for what you believe in as an individual is an extraordinary quality. I stay true to myself in the face of society's pressures and expectations by carrying myself in a respectful way and continue to be a positive person in the face of society today. In passage 5 Montag reads a poem called Dover Beach to the faction of woman in Fahrenheit 451 to show them the significance of reading books; is right. Montag is doing what he thinks is right because he understands that he lives in a society where they don't allow people to read books or own one. Montag's life exemplify how important it is to reading books that will help you become knowledgeable. The price of standing up for yourself is a component of losing value in oneself and the price of complacency is you wanting to make a change in your life by doing what's right.

  68. I think, you should always do what you think is right because no one else's opinions matter but yours. Even if people don't like your opinion or beliefs at the end of the day you know you spoke your mind. The price of doing nothing can be that you will not be blamed however the guilt will always follow you. People might not know the real truth but you always will.

  69. In my opinion, I think people should do what they believe is right. Being safe would be better but no person enjoys living a "safe" life because that would be too boring. If you do what you think is right mistakes are able to be made and people will learn amd move forward from them. Although you would be doing what is right there is always a consequence to a person's actions. When going with or against society it is possible to get a negative reaction. Its more likely to get a negative reaction if your actions are negative. That is why in Fahrenheit 451 there was a negative reaction to Montag when he read the book to the ladies. That showed a negative reaction when Mrs. Phelps spazzed on him. Therefore, it is smart to do what you think is right in your opinion and be ready to face the negative abd positive consequences that come from what you do.

  70. I think you should always do what you think is right no matter what, because you might make a difference one day. You stay true to yourself by doing what you think is right and not following the crowd. And if you don't do something about what u think is right then nothing will ever change.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think when it comes to deciding weather to do what is right or wrong it depends on the situation. I say this because different situations call for different reactions at different times. You should always do what you think is right but make sure its safe. But sometimes you need to do what is safe because what you think is a good plan or the right decision may backfire and go wrong. Doing what you thinks is right may come with consequences because what you think is right may be wrong in other peoples eyes. Like for instance in Fahrenheit451 Montag thinks its right to let everyone have the choice to read and that everyone else should read. But to everyone else that is not what they think. They think they should do what is safe which is follow the rules and not use or read books. So with that being said I think that you should do whatever you feel in your heart because either way people are never going to always agree with you so do what makes you happy. Just be sure to carefully and wisely decide how you want to react to different situations.

  72. I think you should do what is right because you dont want to have to deal with guilt knowing that you could have fixed something. You stay true to yourself by not acting or trying to be like something your not. Dont change yourself and do something that you dont want to do just to satisfy others. The price of not doing anything is like i said before, guilt. You dont want to live knowing that you had the chance to fix something you thought was wrong, but you didnt. The price of standing up for yourself may not always be a good thing because in F451 montag was holding books and reading them even though they were banned in his society, and in the end he got caught and had his house burned down.

  73. I think you should always do whats right just for the simple fact that deep inside you wanted to make that decision and you don't second guess about it. It can depend on the situation though but you always have to be real with your self. you may not like your decision at the end of the day but you know did the right thing and that will make you feel a lot more better.

  74. I believe that there s a thin line between doing whats right and whats safe, but in the instance of the 4th passage I think montag made a wrong call of how he told the women of the book and telling them about themselves which i think is was safe because just even saying the word book could have gotten him put in jail, but nether the less montage was just trying to stay true to himself in this society that is oppressive by telling the truth about themselves. an this could also be seen as stand up for himself and having pride.

Even though being said d e is a good thing it still allows people to control you by sitting and watching things happen. Think about civil rights leaders they all took a chance in doing what is right and look at the success they have. I'm pretty sure they were contemplating every decision to see if t is good for their families but they took the honorable role a took a stance. So even though your scared use that fear to fight g harder.

  77. I strongly believe that doing what is right is always the best option. This is because doing what is right builds character, shows integrity, and exemplifies a model person. In Fahrenheit 451, Montag showed his strict-to-the-rules wife, Mildred his secret stash of forbidden books. Doing so, was an opportunity for Mildred to learn and develop her mind. He later read a poem out loud for Mildred's friends, hoping to spark something; something that can help him show people and society the light in their dark way of living. He did so without being held back by cautions, and fear.

  78. I think you should do what is right, because choosing "safe" isn't always "safe". Right is Right no matter what the the situation is . Just because sometimes being right comes with its ups and downs, you should always choose being right over anything . just like wrong is wrong . You stay true to yourself in the face of society's pressure and expectations by standing up for what you believe in and not what everybody else wants you to believe. You have to have confidence in yourself and take risky tasks to prove your standing your own ground. who cares about what society thinks especially if its just a big lie stopping you from knowing the truth. Just like when Montag pulled that poem out and read it to the woman. he knew he wasn't suppose to have a book but because he is so passionate about books he decided to do the right thing and share what he enjoys . not what society enjoys ( watching television) . The price of standing up for yourself is risky but at the end of everything you feel great about yourself because you didn't let what others though and said about you get in the way of you being yourself. The price of not doing anything will get you nowhere in life !!

  79. I think that you should always do what is right, rather than what is safe because everything you may not be safe but it could be the right decision, and could benifit all instead of yourself. In order to stay true to yourself you have to stick to what you believe in or know what the right thing to do is and not try to go along with others just because they are. For example, montag and others are examples of one who stick to themselves because they disagree with the society, by realizing that they are wrong and it is hurting them.

  80. I belive that doing whats right is a good thing up to a certain ectinct.Doing whats rights also has a lot of components, one component being is to do it the safe way.Witout doing whats right in a safe may lead you to doing something wrong. What i mean by this is that someone could stand for something they believe in very strongly and could try to persuade others to think the same way as them, but by doing so it frightens them and makes them even more angry and they run and tell everyone about what that person might've done just like in F451. You stay true to yourself in the face of society by realizing this is something that you want to be and not letting anyone bring you down no matter what. The price of compleceny could result in you not getting what you want or deserve because you dont advocate and stand up for things you might believe in.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I think you should do what is right even though you think doing what is safe is right because it's not it can result in something bigger than it needs to be. You can stay true to yourself in society's pressures and expectations by not letting society get to block the negativity out and try to focus on the positive oppose to trying to react to what society is putting out there. The price of not doing anything or just standing up for yourself is good and bad because not doing anything is you won't have any consequences that comes along with standing up for yourself but then the problem you have will continue because you didn't try and stop early. When standing up for yourself the problem could stop but you will most likely have consequences that come along with for instance when montag was standing up to the women about how he felt and read those books to them even though he wasn't suppose but he wanted to prove a point but he prove the point and also got punished because Beatty found out he had books hidden in his house and burned it .

  82. I believe that I'm on the line befween the two prions of doing what is right but also doing what is safe. Sometimes doing what is right may also cause harm to you and then you aren't considered to be safe anymore. That's what Montag did, stood up for himself which later cause him to be unsafe and in trouble. Staying true to yourself is just a matter of doing what you believe in and I think staying who you are , not changing for anyone else is apart of that too. The price for not doing anything is that you didn't use your voice that could've maybe helped change something but stood by and watched.

Others will see what you have done and will follow. Thanks for your help I was freaking out.

Standing by and watching something that you don't want to happen happen even when you know you can make a change is cowardly and it's one of those things that you regret down the line in life.

I've learned that doing good May not always get it's gratitude but it will make you as a human feel good inside , being soulfully mean or ignorant is something that is not always with in it just goes back to lack of knowledge or not fully understanding that doing good always has a purpose even to a blind id person it can be seen .

If you are the type of person that doesn't mind facing the consequences of doing what's right then you should go ahead and do the right thing and stand for what you believe in. But if you don't want to face the consequences, then being an advocate for that topic isn't for you. The reason our society doesn't change is because most people actually are afraid of the consequences and don't do what they feel is right. Personally I feel like it depends on the situation and the consequences of that situation. If you stay neutral on something you believe strongly, nothing will ever change and you'll just be stuck waiting for somebody else to be brave and fight. Society expects a lot from us but you have to stay true to yourself because then you'll be living for someone else. A perfect example
