Blog Post #3: Evaluating "Harrison Bergeron"

In Kurt Vonnegut's short story "Harrison Bergeron," the citizens are are handicapped so that everyone is 'equal'.  Using examples from the story and your interpretations, respond to the following questions:
  • How did Harrison respond to being oppressed?
  • Was his effort worth it? Why or why not?
  • What would you have done if you lived in a society like his?
Responses due MIDNIGHT on Tuesday, Sept 16, 2014.

  1. Harrison Bergeron wasn't happy about being under all that scrap metal.Harrison broke apart his scrap metal on his body and his bag of birdshot on his neck to reveal his true self.He then took off the musicians' scrap metal so they can play music without being tied down.He called out his ballerina girlfriend to be apart of his little plan with taking back what's our bodies. His effort was worth it because he got the musicians to play their music freely without the bags on their necks and got the ballerina's earpiece out her ear so she can dance freely without the buzzes in her ears going off.Harrison also got the people the freedom of thinking on their own.If I lived in a Society like this,I would probably do the same thing as Harrison Bergeron because someone needs to speak for the people when they are in peril.Having bags of birdshots on your necks and scrap metal on all the other parts of your body are like suicide mentally. The buzzes in people's ears stop them from thinking on their own meaning stops them from living life. When living life, you needs to have control of your mind to make the right decisions in life.

  2. Harrison did not like the idea of being locked down, so he escaped. He was plotting to overthrow the government.I don't think his effort was worth it because in the end he still was killed . If he would have just stayed in jail he would still be alive.Honestly,I don't know what I have done if I lived in a society like his, because everyone is like really weird and considered intelligent or handicapped. How can someone just make you wear handicapped gear or say whether your intelligent, and say you can't think as hard as intelligent people if your handicapped?

  3. Harrison was not really satisfied because he had to wear a mask but he had broken out of the mask and the thing that was on his body to reveal himself. In a way I think it was worth it because he has prove that he should be treated the same as others. I also, think it wasn't worth it to because he was killed for this action. If I had lived in this society I would had followed the rules and kept the mask on because I don't want to die.

  4. Harrison efforts were not worth it. He should have just respected the rules. The way that Harrison responded to being sad is he would not let it get n the way at all. If I lived in this society I would freak. I hate when people are equal.

  5. Harrison Bergeron didn't respond very well to being oppressed( meaning he didn't take it). He had a choice to escape the prison and he did. Harrison firmly believed that people's talents are what made them special and that it was nothing to be afraid of or intimidated by. Because of this belief he tore off all the weight Society put on him on aired television and showed people what it meant to dance! To dance outstandingly without being hindered because others aren't as good.
I honestly believe his effort wasn't worth it. Yes, he did for a moment make others feel awe towards what they could have been like, but then again their memories are short so they would end up forgetting what they saw. And on top of that, Harrison and the ballerina were made an example of. If anything, it would make people more convinced that was how Society was meant to be and that there will always be radicals. That, and I would rather Harrison and the beautiful ballerina girl take their talents to the grave than waste them on a world with short term memory.
If I lived in a Society such as this I would have lived a regular life. As regular as anyone else. And I would do nothing bold, as Harrison did, no. I would do what was the norm and not try to fight against it. For I am a thin piece of paper, I crumple under a strong force.

  6. Harrison was in jail, and than he escaped. To me he was to controlling and if he wasn't he would've still be alive today. I think the society made him that way. His effort was not worth it because him and the ballerina died because of dancing, which is weird. If I lived in that type of society I wouldn't be able to survive.

  7. Harrison Bergeron didn't take being oppressed well. He had a choice to escape the prison and his choice was to take it. Harrison believed that talent are what make people special and that you should in brace it not to hide it and be ashamed. Because his believing he went against Society on tv and told people what dancing really is. I believe it was worth it. Yes, he died for dancing but really he died for something he believed in and that's what really matters, they are just Existing ! Not living . If I lived in a Society such as this I would have lived the Radical life just like him. Different from anyone else. Just like Harrison did, But i would have did it better. I wouldn't do what was the normal because Im living to live not just to exist !

  8. Harrison didn't respond very well to being oppressed because he didn't like the fact that they lock him up for being locked up so he escaped and then he said he was going to be Emperor and he needed a Empress and he got one and then one of Handicap General came in and shot the both of them for breaking the rules. No his effort wasn't worth it because he dead and Life goes on without him. If I lived in that society I wouldn't be happy and I would try and make people realize what type of society we live in and try not to get caught by the HG

  9. Harrison did not take being oppressed well because he felt like people should show how their special and should be able to showcase their talents to the world for entertainment. He tried to change the way his society worked by reminding people what dance really was before the dancers had to wear things to weigh them down and masks to cover their faces. I think his effort was worth it and I think he made the right decision in what he did. I don't believed he deserved to die because he was trying to make a positive change but in that society it was a negative change so they decided to kill him. I could not live in a society like that because I believe everyone is different and you should be able to be who you really are .

  10. In response to being oppressed, Harrison escaped from prison and seized full control of the news broadcast. With society in the front row, he removed all of his handicaps and that of the other people in the broadcast. He blatantly went against the government's orders, martyring himself to the benefit of eventually no one. His effort was not worth his life; this goes back to the "right vs. safe" debate. Standing up for his beliefs resulted in his death, instead of following what he was supposed to follow.

I don't think I could survive in such a society. Equality should not be forced through handicaps, but through individual choice. We have the choice on whether to accept ourselves as equals no matter what or to fight for that right. Unfortunately, in the here and now, insecurity comes in all shapes and sizes.

  11. Harrison wasn't very happy about him being locked up. He wasn't happy that he had to wear a mask and metal, so he can be like everybody else. Harrison had broke the metal and took off his mask. Harrison took off the musicians metal so they can play music. He always took off a bag from the ballerina and they started dancing. He want show how people dance. Yes it was worth it because he died from being himself and not trying to be like everybody else. He died in his comfort zone. I think I would not survive in their society. I would try to make some of my own rule and be my own. I will always be in jail for a long time because I would not allow the radio in my head

  12. Harrison did not take it well, his respond was that he felt like people should show how they're special in their own way and should be able to show or spread their talent to the world for amusing entertainment. He didn't like the fact that they put him away from being arrested, so he escaped. Afterwards, he tried to change the way their society was working by reminding everyone what dance really was before the dancers had to wear special wearings to cover up looks, identity, or attraction. I honestly didn't think he had to die because all he was doing was trying to make a point or statement. I don't think I could live in a society like Harrison's because I think everyone should be who they are instead of hiding their true colors and showing someone whom they want others to see. There's nothing wrong to show your true self, everybody's different and special in their own way and they should be proud to show it, it's who you are.

  13. Harrison apposed when he took off the handicap bag and was claming everything was his. he was making everyone take off there handicaps and he made them all dance to good music and made them all actually have fun. his effort was not worth it since it was by putting fear in others and in the end he got shot and died. i would have try to do it a little more secretevly. jovan ramos

  14. Harrison Bergeron clearly did not respond to being oppressed in a positive way at all. Instead he did it in a negative way and did everything in a way that just showed how much frustration was built up inside of him. I think his effort in the end of the day was not worth it because if you think about it he didn't make any change, he just put on a show that made people very angry. I think if I was put in that society I would of probably been just as frustrated as Harrison but I would've definitely went about it differently because I would want to make an actual change in society not get killed right on the spot. I would've came up with a well thought out plan.

  15. Harrison was not really happy with being locked down and because he had to wear a mask to hide is nice looking features but he finally broke out of it. I think his effort was worth it because he got the musicians to play their music freely but then I think it wasn't worth it because rather doing what was safe he did what he thought was right and lost his life because of this. If I live a society like Harrison I would never come out I would stay to myself and locked away somewhere because the life they lived was rough to me,but sometimes you have to do what makes you happy so I think I am in the middle with his effort being worth it or not because his actions show a part of life like trying to do good things but sometimes bad things come at you.

  16. The way Harrison responded to being oppressed was to go on the air and inform people that this is not right and that you do not have to accept it.
Considering the fact, that Harrison was killed I do not think that his effort was worth it. He was killed because he decided to break out of jail on go onto the news to let people know this society was not right. Harrison did what was right instead of what is safe, but there is a time and place.
If I was to live in this awful society I would go along with it and live a normal life. I would not like it though because no one is unique if you make everyone equal.

  17. Harrison responded to being oppressed by breaking the tools used to handicap him and showing everyone else how they should live. I think his effort was worth it. The sight of him dancing is now left in the heads of those people, and it won't go unnoticed. After the sight of it, everyone will miss the better dancing than the handicap dancing. If I lived in this society I would organize a regime to destroy all the handicap devices all at once and over throw all the H-G Men.

  18. Harrison didn't like being oppressed well because he had a chance to escape from jail, become emperor and free people from their handicaps so he took it. Yes because he stood up for something he believed in. I would probably do the same thing except I wouldn't go to a place, I would break out of jail and secretly destroy everything that make us the same

  19. Harrison didn't take the ideal of being oppressed well. Harrison escaped from jail and rebelled against his society. His effort was shot down but he was just trying to open up everyone's eyes to what they already knew. He tryed to people see what the society was hiding was hoding from them isn't even that crucial. I don't know what I've would have done, rebel perhaps. Somebody has to to stand up for what they believe. Roll with the punches or win.

  20. Harrison did not like being treated the way he was being treated. Almost like an animal. He broke free of all the harnesses he was being chained to. He then got other people to go along with it. The effort was not worth it because he ended up being killed which is never ok. If I was him I would have done the same thing. At least he died trying

  21. Harrisin didn't like the fact that he was locked down so he escaped from his weights. Therefore I think maybe he thought he had nothing else to live for so why not break the rules. This could be why Harrison broke the rules. I believe this all was worth it because Harrison breaking out could encourage people in his world to stand up for what they believe in. Then I believe that Harrison should have not done that because he knew the consequences. If I had lived in a society like this I wouldn't know what to do with myself. I would probably try to get the people on my side and try to start an civil rights act and bring back the old amendments.

  22. Harrison didn't like that fact that he being oppressed. He wanted to show people that they shouldn't be afford to show off their natural ability's instead of everything being the same, thinking the same and having the same type of ability's that everyone else have. I think Harrison's effort was worth it because he at least gave the people an idea of being different from each other instead of everyone being the same. If I lived in their society I think that I wouldn't make it because I'm the type of person that thinks that I am better then everyone else at everything I do, so having the same ability's as everyone I wouldn't like it and I would of did the exact same thing that Harrison did in the story.

  23. Harrison did not like being oppressed. He did not being locked up because he was different. He escaped from prison and tried to rebel against the Empire. In the end, he got shot for standing up for what he believed in. I don't think loosing his life was worth standing up for what he believed in because your life is a lot more valuable than anything. If I lived in a society like that, I would not like it. I would not want to.be like everybody else. Being your own person is what makes yu unique and special. I would not want that to be taken from me.

  24. How Harrison responded was that he wanted everyone to know how he was feeling. So he told them what he felt. The effort wasn't worth it because at the end Harrison was killed. And he wasn't the only one killed, he got someone else killed too. If I lived in a society like this I would be my own person. I would try to be different from others as much a could. Because being different and showing yourself different from others is a way that others can see how you really are.

  25. Harrison Bergeron didn't take being oppressed well. He escaped out of jail to take over the government. It seemed to only show people that the society was not right. He was sidetract when he started dancing and wounded up being shot and killed. Harrison's effort was somewhat worth it. He showed the other citizens what he thought the society should b like. Its only up to the citizens to choose what they'll do with the experience . They could either go along with society, or go against it like Harrison. If I lived in a society like this, I would probably go along with it if the consequences would be dying. If its not dying, then I would let my thoughts be heard!

  26. Well Harrison responded by going against what they thought was trying to make people equal and he did that by showing them how to "dance". Meaning that it wasn't the dance they were used to and forced to do but it was one that had showed talents and special abilities. He also took off the ballerina's mask and handicap ear piece. Overthrowing the government by saying he is above (Him being the Emperor and the ballerina being the Empress). No his effort wasn't worth it because Diana Moon Glampers had saw the foolishness going on and she pulled a shotgun and killed him and the ballerina while dancing and kissing in mid air. If I lived in that society to be honest I wouldn't know how to function because I love to show my talents like singing , dancing , making people laugh , doing hair and more. But I would find some other way to fight back against the government and their stupid ways of making people "equal".

  27. Harrison didn't take being a oppressed to well because he wasn't able to show off who he really is. Not able to be himself and live life the he wants. Sadly his effort was not worth it he got himself killed along with someone else; because the did the same as he did. If i was in this society and i saw what happen and i knew the consequences of my action if i would have done, no. I would just play it safe and be in society . I wouldn't go to prison just for that.

  28. Harrison did not like the fact of being oppressed. Harrison believed that people special talents should be shared with the world instead of hiding it. He a had a plan and he took off all the handicaps from his body. Then he took the straps from the musicians and his ballerina girlfriend to bring them apart of the plan. Harrison wanted to show the that their talents made them special. I believe his effort into this was worth it because he made a point to me but in the end he and his girlfriend was shot to dead. I guess he thought that was the right thing to do so he did it. I would have did something similar to this but handled it differently because he shouldn't have died. I would have been more secretly with unlike Harrison, he did his actions in the open.

  29. Harrison reasoned to being oppresses the same way people who are tired of being oppressed respond he tries to make change & his efforts were in my opinion worth it because while his change did not last & was cut off at the knees by the government he still managed to make change for a small period of time meaning he didn't die for nothing. I lived in this society I would want to fight back just as he did me really doing it is a different story though.

  30. Harrison did not like the fact of being locked up and having to wear a mask, so he decided to break out of jail. He made a point that people's talents are special. I believe that this effort was worth it because, this society is so boring and everyone is just weird. There is no diversity . If I lived in this society the most I could do is be myself. I wouldn't feel comfortable changing my character because everyone acts the same

  31. Harrison felt as though he had to speak out and show everyone it was okay to rebel against the laws. He wanted to show everyone the beauty in expressing your talents. I believe his effort was worth it. It was a chance to be different and show everyone that they can be different in there own way.If i was in this kind of society, I don't think I would have just went all out like that and got shot. I just don't believe that was the smartest way of going about this situation. I like to get my point across, but I also like living a whole lot more!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Harrison responded the way he was suppose to. He didn't want society trying to take over him and tell him what he couldn't be. He had every right to rebel and get people to join him. He was clearly a leader. If I was apart of this society I would have also rebelled but I would have been smarter about it. He should have had a back up plan or brought other people from where he escaped from to be her protection. Any society should let people be different. I think his actions were justified and completely worth it. He almost got through to his parents and he proved that if someone leads the pack then others will follow.

  33. Harrison dealt with the being oppressed in that society by escaping from prison. I do not think his effort was worth it because he winded up getting killed. He should have just stayed in jail because then he wouldn't be dead. If I loved in this society, I would stay in the house because I would not want to get put in jail or killed because of the inequality that was going on.

  34. Harrison Bergeron didn't take being oppressed well. He escaped out of jail to take over the media and show people that the society was was being held back. He began dancing with a beautiful ballerina who was masked, but ended up being shot and killed. Harrison's effort was somewhat worth it. He portrayed to the society what he thought it should be like. Its up to the citizens to choose what they'll do next. They could either join him in the rebellion or just back like they did before. If I lived in a society like this, I would probably go along with it especially if the consequences were getting shot and killed. But if I had a group of rebels before hand , then I would try my best to get people to realize and bring them back to life, back to reality.

  35. Harrison was oppressed because they changed everything about him. They made him wear weights so he couldn't be athletic, they made him wear a clown nose so he couldn't be good looking. These things caused him to be oppressed and he responds by tearing off all his disabilities and throws them to the floor and tries to make his own country him being king. In the end it was not worth it unless he inspired someone. I say this because in the end Harrison gets himself killed and someone else killed in front of everyone. This shows that if you stand up for what you believe in or in Harrison's case break the law then you will die. I would stay on the safe side on do nothing in this case because I don't want to break the law.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Harrison does what he thinks is right by breaking the law and going against society but trying to overthrow the government and taking off his handicaps and trying to get other people to follow him. I think his effort was worth it because maybe to him he didn't have Anything else to live for. He probably felt that he could take that risk and if it doesn't go his way he'll rather die but it wasn't safe because in the end he got killed. If I lived in this society I don't think I would live for long because I would rather die than to be considered as "handicap" because the amount of intelligence I have. I wouldn't be a complacent person I would fight for my right to do my best at things not live the way that society expected people to be. How is this society considered equal when people can't even be beautiful or smart. That's not equal and I don't think I could be in that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. In a perfect world no Harrison shouldn't had died. But we are not in a perfect world. He's actions are only reasonable, but him ending his life was unequal and not necessary. Harrison only wanted to show true dance. I think the ending was entertaining for it to be a book, but in thr real world I would have wanted the action to continue and Harrison should have maybe saved everyone that was in jail.

  39. he responded to society with aggression and trying to overthrow the government, he broke out of jail and went to a news station and told them he was the new ruler. yes because he deserves to fight for what her believes in. although he did it in a very aggressive way he still fought for what he believed in. if i lived in a society like this i would have tried to form a coalition to rebel instead of fighting by myself because, the government is to strong to be fought against by one person.

  40. Harrison responded to being oppressed by breaking free from all the metal and dancing doing something that wasnt supposed to be done in society. I do not think that Harrisons effort was worth it because he got killed. So even though he stood up to go against society he didnt go very far with it because now he is dead and theres not much else that can be done. Maybe if he would have approached the situation differently and more smartly he would still be living and even trying to change society for the better .And in this society honestly I wouldn't last but just like I said how Harrison could have handled the situation better is what I would have did .I would have a better strategy to take down the government and stand up for whats right with out getting killed to live and see my success.
