Malcolm x role in the civil rights movement was to make sure that all blacks felt supreme and were handed nothing. He did this by getting in white people faces. He was a leader that was passive activist. Meaning that again he would get in your face until you did something. He wanted blacks expect and get the respect they deserve. He did this by having and saying that being black okay. Also America should have charges brought against the country because of unfair treatment of blacks, According to the movie. In one generation the black slave women had been raped by a slave master that was white." Malcolm meant that if black people felt in danger they should fight back. Yes, he did have a positive effect on the civil rights movement. By showing and shaving in people faces that Blacks are people.

Malcolm X was a strong leader and a huge activist in the Civil rights movement. He was a great public speaker who promoted the tyranny of the white man. He spoke on how they tried to make black feel as if they were worthless. After converting to Islam he preached how all afro americans should stick together and rebel as one. He said from the years of suffering and degrading that the white man did; only an " eye for an eye " would make things even between the two cultures. At first he wanted them to revolt in a violent way then and took a more pacifist approach. This is proven when in the movie he. At the time however he was not like others of the time like MLK who were pacifist the whole way through. X was very powerful and had a large impact on the civil rights movement because of his voice. He had a very positive effect because at this time blacks needed something to believe in; Malcolm helped them believe in each other and remain united at this time of great racism.
A very strong analysis! It looks like you didn't get to include the examples from the film, and there are a few grammar errors. But overall very nicely done.
DeleteIn the movie, it shows how Malcolm X was preaching the Islam temple about how white people are "blued eyed devils," and black people should not have to listen to them. Also in the film, it shows how there was an angry crowd outside the police station and nobody could move the mob except for Malcolm X, and the police officer says, "no man should have this much power." With this being said, it is proven that Malcolm has more than just a powerful voice, he has strong actions to make the crowd move forward. Malcolm X had a positive effect on the Civil Rights Movement because he was a respectable leader and everybody loved and respected him as a person.

DeleteI am glad you added more details! But be careful about making such broad statements - one of the key elements of Malcolm X's story is that NOT everyone loved him. He was a very controversial figure, then and still now in some ways.

ReplyDeleteMalcolm X played a significant role in the civil rights movement. In his younger life he faced many hardships and took part in a lot of violence and crimes.it was not until he was introduced to the Nation of Islam, where he began to change his life around and started to view race differently. To try to advance blacks civil rights, Malcolm X spoke out for African Americans in public places, Masjid's, and even in front of churches. Also, before and after being asked by Elijah Muhammad to speak around the country for the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X set out to convert and expose people to the teachings of Islam. At this time another African American civil rights leader named Martin Luther King Jr was also fighting for blacks civil rights. King and X bumped heads due to the fact that King promoted nonviolence; however, Malcolm X supported nonviolence. Malcolm X impacted blacks racial identity through Religion and protest. He believed whites were the evil and racist ones and Christianity only supported whites. He fought and did anything necessary to put an end to racism against blacks. Malcolm X did not believe in a peaceful revolution; he believed in an eye for an eye. Because of his way of thinking, the Nation of Islam grew to 40,000 members by 1960. During his protest and teaching he spoke a lot about a complete separation between African Americans and White Americans and how he wanted to reclaim our identity and history. One example from the film that shows this is when he changed his last name to "X" to cut off all connections to slavery and to white slave masters and as a tribute to the unknown name of his African ancestors. Another example from the film that shows that Malcolm X wanted a compete separation of races was when a white college student came up to him and told him how she supported him and wanted to help him and he denied. I believe Malcolm X had a negative and positive effect on the civil rights movement. Because he believed in a violent revolution to create an independent black race, it only made the civil rights movement more violent. However, he helped African Americans take back their identities and also taught them to become better people and to have better morals. Also, he taught them to respect themselves and most importantly women.
Very thoughtful and thorough response!

ReplyDeleteReligion changed Malcolm X's Life for the better. When he converted he became a person who was more caring, forgiving, tolerant, dedicated, and loyal to his companions. The Nation of Islam made him believe that blacks were once these powerful figures and that they deserved to be treated better, as equals, but separated from whites. The positive impact he had on the nation was that because of his powerful words he brought more people to the organization. The negative was that he got too much publicity and when he started to stray from the nation, people followed. In the movie, Malcolm stood in the streets and rallied his followers to wait in front of the hospital until they received good news. Also in the movie, Malcolm had a talk with Brother Baines about his rising popularity. He was ordered to stand down. In 8 years, Malcolm gathered 39,600 followers. His involvement with the nation had a positive and negative affect on his life: the positive was that the organization prompted him to learn more about Islam and set himself straight, the negative was that his detachment from the nation led to his cruel death.
Nicely analyzed! Be careful, though, of listing examples but not explaining what those examples SHOW. How do they support your ideas?

ReplyDeleteWith Malcolm X being a part of Islam it cause his family to feel endangered, and neglected because he was getting a lot of negative and positive publicity. By him speaking out and stating things he believed he was taking dangerous life risks. He soon faced death after the NOI changed and turned against him. In the reading he talked about how hard he was working for Islam and Elijah Muhammad; however, in the movie we seen that while he was helping, he was receiving threats from others. Also his house was burned down because of his outspoken words against Elijah Muhammad. We believe it was worth it because he was looked up to by Muslims and it made a significant changed to peoples lives. We believe it was not worth it because he unfortunately lost his life and left his children fatherless.
Well analyzed and a strong use of examples! Just watch out for typos/grammar errors (although I know you were working quickly).

ReplyDeleteCivil Rights Movement..
Malcolm X's role in the Civil Rights Movement was to bring peers attention that society stills lack equality in the world. He also wanted people to know that if you can not be safe in within your people or race, you can not be safe in your own home or country. Malcolm tried to protest outside in front of people and preach about the nation of Islam to advance the civil rights movement. Malcolm's methods were different from other leaders such as MLK. MLK was a non-violent man and Malcolm disagreed with this mindset. Malcolm thought that if you are in a violent situation you have every right to be violent back, Malcolm X impacted blacks' facial identity by calling white people ''The devil white man''. In the excerpts from the autobiography of a Malcolm X, he says that ''the devil white man cut these black people off from all knowledge of their own kind, and cut them off from any knowledge". Malcolm X had a positive effect on the Civil Rights Movement because his death left a huge impact on people all around and helped them realize how bad people needed a change.
Very strong response! Just be sure to explain all points - for instance, what affect did him calling white people "the devil white man" have on blacks' identity? What 'huge impact' did he actually have? Overall nicely done.
DeleteMalcolm X was charismatic leader for the people he lead. He had passion and aggressive with the speeches he gave. He knew how to mix emotions of the people to get them feeling how he feels. This gets many followers for his cause. He spent a time in prison and he knows how that it is hard for people to live. And because of this people follows him because they can relate to him. During the film on the march for Brother John. He lead people based on hand movements, and as they marched even more people joined him. And also through out the film he gave many speeches which stirred peoples emotions and flocked them into his cause. For a time he was part of the Nation of Islam, which allowed him to give many speeches for a while. So yes he was a great leader at his time. Because he had the power to bring unity among people, which was not common back then.

ReplyDeleteMalcolm X’s role in the Civil Rights Movement was important because he himself was a Civil Rights Activist. Malcolm advocated for blacks with methods like speeches , rallies, and ministering his thoughts about the Nation Of Islam. He became apart of the Nation of Islam after he got out of jail , which helped him find his true identity. Also allowed him to see how wrong whites actually treated black people. Mr. X used violence to get his point across , unlike Martin Luther Kings approach who to use nonviolence . He helped blacks feel better about themselves and gave them courage. For example in the Malcolm X after the scene in the hospital a man came up to him and wanted to be apart of the movement he had created. We believed that Malcolm X had a positive impact on the Civil Rights Movement because he used a different approach when it came to speaking out about problems . When he spoke out about problems he chose the ones that others were afraid to speak out about and he was always aggressive. His aggression made many others want to back him.

Leadership
Malcolm X was a courageous leader who stood up for the rights of Muslim African American. Some characteristics that made Malcolm X a strong leader is because he was a risk taker, very passionate in what he believed in, and ambitious. He used many different strategies to help him lead others. Some strategies he used were persuasion, showing power, rebellious decisions, his plans and actions, and lastly, protesting. There were many different occasions in his life that helped him develop those characteristics and figure out how to use these strategies. By him reading books, experiencing family struggles, knowing African American history and his fathers death all helped him develop these strategies. In the movie Malcolm X, it showed the KKK burning down his home as a young boy, and his father having a gun to warn them. As an adult, some members of the Muslim nation burned down his house and he had a gun ready to fight. This shows that Malcolm is an ambitious and confident leader. One piece of information that helps support the idea from a brief biography of Malcolm Little, “You don't have a turn the cheek revolution. There’s no such thing as a nonviolent revolution.” Malcolm X was a leader who held his own ground, was virtuous in what he did by taking the strengths and weaknesses of others, and putting them into action.

ReplyDeleteMalcolm X's role in the Civil Rights Movement was to ensure that blacks had a better life. He was standing up for equal rights. Malcolm X's advanced blacks' civil rights when he gave speeches and did protests to encourage awareness. His methods were different because he encouraged violence and fighting back. He impacted blacks' racial identity because he have them the confidence to continue and gave them a voice in the world for once. One example of his civil rights activism was when he lead a march to go to the hospital when one of his own were badly beaten and untreated. Marches are a common thing for civil rights because it shows a large people care about this issue. Another example is when he gave speeches to large crowds which influenced them to stand up for themselves. In the first reading, it explains how he died and how he died. Even after Malcolm X died, his legacy still lived on and his message stuck with a lot of people. Malcolm X had a positive effect because he made people feel important, encouraged them to fight back, and left a stamp on racial inequality.

Malcolm X’s effects on society was both positive and negative. Some believed that he was the living brotherhood of society and others believed that he was a plaque in society. Malcolm X was portrayed as a crazy, ruthless, and a very powerful wise man. Malcolm X was described those ways because he was not phased by the whites, in fact he mocked them and wore the suits they said weren’t meant for blacks and even permed his hair, he even went as far as denying help from a white women who believed in what he believed in. He also had his own empire of the world in his own mind; so, he did things his own way. Malcolm X had always wanted to change how the African Americans think, he believed that they were thinking how the white man wanted them to think and being used as puppets. One example of Malcolm X having an effect on society was when he waited outside of the church and asked the people this question, “Aren’t you tired of praying for a help that you never get?” He never got an answer, but after saying that he had 5 times more of a crowd coming to his speeches then going to church. He improved his views by going out and talking to people trying to help them open their eyes to see that they were playing by the white man’s cards. A second Example of Malcolm X making a change in society is over all fighting back and speaking out for what he believed in. Malcolm X said that, “You don’t have to turn the other cheek for revolution, There is no such thing as non-violence revolution.” meaning that you can always be nice about things and keep quiet about it, and try to talk it out, but at the end of the day actions speak louder than words. As Malcolm X made progress and getting people to open their eyes and speak out, it alerted people because he became so successful that some people believe he was wiser than Muhammad. The government then took notice of this change that was about to happen, Malcolm X’s change in society was about to take place and they wanted to put an end to it, so they unfortunately assassinated him. Malcolm X died, but not in vain. Up to this day April 11th, 2014 no one no longer bites their tongue and hold back what they have to say; everyone fights for what they believe is right. Malcolm X has changed the peoples in society minds to not be afraid , but to be brave.

ReplyDeleteMalcolm X had the power in making sure blacks had self pride before making amends with whites. As we all know Malcolm X based most of his career on the Nation of Islam, which included him being the spokesperson for the Nation of Islam. Before Malcolm donated his life and time for the Nation of Islam he was more of a member to society's views. He participated in shinning shoes and perming his hair to become straighter, but through his faith in discovering the Nation of Islam, Malcolm learned to seek independence as an African American. In the film,"Malcolm X", Malcolm took it upon himself to make sure his people got what they needed such as medical assistance after being brutally beaten. Malcolm also showed society that African Americans did not need the extra help for their voices to be heard. He turned down white people who thought they could help with black people issues. From the reading "Malcolm X" he wrote, "The devil white man cut these black people off from all knowledge of their own kind". These words speak to how society has deprived blacks or their knowledge and they are unable to fight for it. Society at first did not look at Malcolm X with honor. They insisted on trying to find ways to break him and the Nation of Islam. Some people wanted him dead and others wanted to praise him. But by being with the nation of Islam the only people that society thought he cared for was blacks but as time moved on, he changed, and Malcolm went to Mecca, they saw that he not only wanted to fight for his people but he wanted it to be equal for everyone. Before Malcolm X passed and the Nation of Islam turned on him he had more people to honor him than anyone could imagine. In the end, society grew to love him as a person despite his passed with the Nation of Islam, he had a positive effect on people because of the drive that made him want to fight for equal rights.

ReplyDeleteNation of Islam:
Religion impacted Malcolm X's life because when he found Allah, he used his knowledge, not as a criminal, but for power.Malcolm wanted to be white and he didn't have any guidance, so when he got arrested for foolish acts, he turned to Allah, while in jail. He then started to use his knowledge in such powerful way that allowed him to have a new aspect on life. During his change in his life he was taught that ALL whites were the devil. Malcom spoke about how he believed that Jesus was black. This due to the fact that the bible said Jesus had hair like wool and skin like brass. Therefore he was not white and could have been black. Over time he believed that instead of trying to bring whites and blacks together they should be separated. Eventually Malcom began to view things differently and was no color. That the color of one's skin should not matter. Malcom was able to spread the religion, but it had a negative side which caused the Nation of Islam to turn on him. They believed that he was getting too much publicity. Taking a turn on his life when his own brothers from the brotherhood assonated him. Even though there were a lot of negative things happening , religion give him a better aspect on life and helped him for the better.

ReplyDeleteMalcolm X's Effect on Society:
The media portrayed Malcolm X as a violent man because he was gaining too much power from the people. The government did not trust Malcolm, the police said that the power he had was too much for one man to have. The government also tapped his phone. Malcolm does not interact with whites well. He shows little interest in them. The white people responded to to him with thoughts of Malcolm being racist. Examples of this was when he marched to the hospital the white, the white people on the streets feared him, and when they interviewed, they did not like any of his responses. Malcolm said, “The devil white cuts these black off from any knowledge of their own language, religion, and past culture.” Malcolm X had both a negative and positive effect on society. He had a negative effect because people were trying to atack him and his positive effect was that he inspired many African Americans to fight racism proactive and nonviolently.
You include a lot of strong points and details in your response. It is a little disorganized, though, and is lacking a topic sentence. Try not to just list points, but rather connect them together!
DeletePeriod 1- Nachaly Burgos, Markeeta Ho, La'Shay Bailey: Leadership
ReplyDeleteMalcolm X was a persuasive, strong worded leader who used his speeches as a way to get people to join the Nation of Islam. Malcolm developed such characteristics of anger, determination and resistance because of the many aspects of his life that eventually shaped who he was and how he decided to lead. During his speeches, he used a very dramatic approach and forceful words to get his point across. His speeches were perhaps the reason why he convinced so many people to join the Nation of Islam. Malcolm became this type of leader because he followed another powerful leader, Elijah Muhammad, whom received his ultimate admiration and utmost respect. In the film, "Malcolm X", we witnessed that his life aspirations came about when he first went and joined the Nation of Islam, converting himself to the Muslim religion, all from inside of jail without even having to witness their work on the outside. Another portion of the film that shows how much of a powerful and determined leader Malcolm X was, was when Malcolm leads a raid of Muslims to protest against what happened to one of his own people, Brother Johnson. This shows just how resistant and brave Malcolm was as a leader because he stood up to the frightening idea of a "white man." From a brief biography of Malcolm X, our group concluded that he had most likely developed many of these characteristics long before he joined up with Elijah Muhammad because of the many experiences he had as an adolescent; however, he had never had the time to apply it to anything of significance because of the lavish lifestyle he was accustomed to. Nonetheless, Malcolm X was a strong leader in our opinion because he was very tolerant, showing the courage to do things that many other leaders perhaps would not have been willing to do, even though his methods were not very appropriate at times.

ReplyDeleteThe Nation of Islam is amazingly great experience that Malcolm had the opportunity of joining when he felt that “Christian’s values” were set in the wrong place.Malcolm X became apart of the islamic religion because he began to get bitter with Christianity. He felt that the caucasians did not practice the religion as it was written the Bible. They contradicted christianity with their actions and gave it a bad name. However, The Nation of Islam made life to be like heaven for African Americans until Malcolm found out that he was told lies by the great Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm first realized that he wanted to join the Nation of Islam when he was consulted with one of his peer inmates. His peer inmate made Malcolm realize that he was doing everything that the white man wanted him to do. Since, Malcolm did not like the actions of the white man, he begun to get angry. His peer inmate then introduced malcolm X to the great Elijah Muhammad and he continued into the path of Islamic religion (Malcolm X).Therefore, he joined the Nation of Islam, which was huge aspect on his life. It made him feel comfortable and wanted because he was grouped with his own minority. It conveyed all of malcolm’s dreams and everything he wanted. He gained more dignity and his pride rose. It created him opportunities that he could not imagine. During his experience with the Nation of Islam, Malcolm created a image that no else could do. He was the NOI’s voice and soul. he persuaded people of his minority to do things they would never do. The persuasion of his voice increased the percentage of muslims. However, Malcolm then became outraged after he found out the truth of Elijah Muhammad and made people to dislike the beliefs of the NOI. He made the brotherhood separate. He made it a war between the two groups because one group sided with Malcolm and the other group sided with Muhammad.

ReplyDeleteMalcolm X became a civil rights leader advocating the empowerment of black people, while promoting Islam as the religion for blacks. The media often portrayed Malcolm as a negative character that was anti white. They interrogated Malcolm for newspaper articles that would make him appear racist. Often times la enforcement feared Malcolm because of the power he held, feeling threaten by his control. As a way to keep tabs on X, the CIA began tapping calls on hi telephone. This shows how much they feared him. Malcolm thought whites lived in their right name, higher power, e difference between the two races , his and theirs, was expected and accepted. As an example he forced police to free Brother Johnson from out of their facilities. Malcolm X had a positive effect of society, he showed and preached that you do not have to live under someone to define your solid worth.
You address each question, but be sure to support your points and explain what an example SHOWS - for instance, what did his effort to free Brother Johnson show about his effect on society? I am also not certain what you were trying to say in the 3rd to last sentence.
DeleteMalcolm X’s work affected his personal life by not having time with his family. By him not having time with his family because of his work they were famously known which led them to be harassed by the people who did not like or respect Malcolm’s views. Since he was one of the leaders of the Nation of Islam, they were protected physically by its members ;although, when strangers called their home, it affected Betty ,his wife, mentally of not knowing of her family and husband’s well being and safety. The personal costs that Malcolm faced was being suspended from preaching on behave of the Nation of Islam, which then led him to go into his own path and preach his own words to the people. By doing this, it made even more people upset with him by them thinking that he was too powerful and wanted him to be stopped. Examples that Malcolm X was not spending enough time with his wife and kids is when Betty was complaining to him about him not being home that much, when he went to Egypt for a period of time, and was traveling across the world preaching the word of Elijah Muhammad. As one can see, because of the work that Malcolm X did for the Nation of Islam, their group has gotten a lot popular; although, all of that hard work and those speeches, it costs him time with his wife and children. In the end the effects, hard work, and costs were worth it to many people. It was worth it because he was spreading the word of Allah, a powerful and persuasive leader in the black community, and because of his values and principles, a lot of men and women wanted to follow by his example. In conclusion, one can see that since Malcolm X worked so hard, it costed him time away from his home.

ReplyDeleteThe ways how Malcolm X's work affected his personal life were that his poor socializing skills caused his family to feel abandoned and jeopardized. His wife Betty felt unsafe because he was not at home to take care of his family like a man would do, instead he was more passionate in trying to fix the problems in the African-American community. With him being not home, she felt as if bad things were heading towards her family and especially towards Malcolm. Since Malcolm was a member in the Nation of Islam, he spent most of his time giving speeches to end the madness in the black communities. Not everyone agreed to his opinions. These effects took a toll on him personally. In the Nation of Islam, Malcolm looked up to his mentor Elijah Muhammad. His faith was really shattered after learning that the man he looked up to, violated many of his own teachings that he taught to Malcolm. After learning of the betrayal, Malcolm decided to follow his own path and his own lead. With that being, Personal costs he had to face were numerous amounts of threats were received to Malcolm and his family, and even his house was vandalized when it was set on fire. Unfortunately, it led to a tragic ending with Malcolm's death. To conclude, the effects and costs worth it because Malcolm was only doing it to cause a change in the black communities, however, they were not worth it when terrible things had to happen to his family, and result of death happening to him.

Malcolm X was a strong, fearless and influential leader who lived by what he taught his followers by practicing what he preached. As shown in the film, Malcolm endured many struggles as a child. He had to become self sufficient because at a young age he was separated from his entire family and thrown in a home. He reevaluated and molded his self into a man; a leader. But, before he became a leader, he gained knowledge on what he was to teach and lead others to. He had a commanding presence and he appealed to his "kind" as a dependable and loyal leader. For example, in the film, Malcolm X gathered a small crowd and soon after, turned that small crowd into a huge crowd; making him the biggest leader of the Islamic community. His choice of words had a impact on many people struggling to find themselves. His stint in prison, along with his visits to Elijah Muhammad, had a very positive effect towards the leader he was to become. Malcolm X inspired many and taught people to be true to themselves. All in all, Malcolm X stood out as a independent man. He started from the bottom, and ended at the top.

ReplyDeleteMalcom X's work affects his personal life by transforming his self to a man fighting for what he believed in the process putting himself in great danger. His work affected his family by him not being there when he had went to speak to the Nation of Islam; his wife Sister Betty hearing from their kids wanting him to tuck them in bed. Then later on in the years of his work he began to get death threats to him and his family. The personal costs he experienced was when he had found out the man he was looking at as a God that he had multiple wives with kids, then he became paranoid to the point that he held a shotgun looking out his window, lastly he had lost his life to the people he thought were his brothers. The examples from the movie is when he came home to his wife scared and worried about the news she saw in the newspaper about Elijah Muhammad; they began to argue. The next example was when he had found out it was true that Elijah Muhammad rumors were true he had felt as though he lost his faith within being Muslim. “Only the mistakes have been mine”

ReplyDeleteMalcolm X's religion had a very negative influence on his life by causing him to become a very violent man and causing him to lose his life. Malcolm joined the Nation of Islam (NOI), which was a Muslim group that fought against segregation towards African Americans in America, in 1952. The Nation of Islam did not sway his views on race completely, but it did help him embrace his African heritage and caused his views on Caucasians to be more hateful. Malcolm X's impact on the Nation of Islam was great he gave many speeches and helped gain publicity for the N.O.I therefore making many people convert and help their movement towards equal rights. Now though his influence was great the N.O.I felt that Malcolm was becoming too powerful and might overthrow the great Elijah Muhammad. In the film "Malcolm X", the class witnessed Malcolm become a very prominent speaker where Malcolm would preach violence towards Caucasians by saying that the only way to overcome their hate towards African Americans is by being violent. Also, in the film Malcolm would be shot down while giving a speech in front of his family and supporters supposedly by the N.O.I. Due to the context of this information it can be shown that the N.O.I had a very negative influence on Malcolm's life by making him more hateful towards Caucasians and live a very violent lifestyle and causing him to die before his time.
Malcolm X played a huge role in the Civil Rights movement. His tole was to bring awareness to the differences between blacks and other races. When Malcolm was sentenced to prison for making the wrong decisions, he came across a man who introduced him to Islam. While in prison he studied Islam and enhanced his vocabulary by studying the dictionary. When he was free'd he met Elijah Muhammad, the prophet of the Islam Religion. He began to bring awareness to the religion and what they stood for. At this time blacks were being treated unfairly by the whites. He Gave speeches. He preached to never let the white man tell your rights. His speeches began to attract other's attention. Because of this, he also recruited members who were eager to join them in the fight for equality. He wanted them to fight back. Some leaders disagreed with Malcolm X, for instance MLK Jr. He wanted the people to stand up without using violence. In an autobiography, Malcolm says that the white man took away our knowledge and held us back from further knowledge. He grew to become one of the most powerful Civil Rights Leaders. Even after his death, his accomplishments effected many people.
