Blog Post #3: Evaluating "Harrison Bergeron"
In Kurt Vonnegut's short story "Harrison Bergeron," the citizens are are handicapped so that everyone is 'equal'. Using examples from the story and your interpretations, respond to the following questions:- How did Harrison respond to being oppressed?
- Was his effort worth it? Why or why not?
- What would you have done if you lived in a society like his?
The way Harrison responded was crazy , he was fed up and ripped off all of the things he was suppose to wear to stay equal to everybody. He also ripped off the ballerinas & the musicians handicaps and wanted to show people the real talent that they have instead of what they are use to seeing . No his effort was not worth it because he risked 3 peoples lives & at the end the society still did not changed . I would have got a few people together to protest and if that didnt work i would keep doing non violence things then i would result to violence
ReplyDeletehe ripped off all his bandages he wanted to be him his efford was worth it because he stood up for himself no matter what and he didn't care because he finally felt free and felt he was doing something right if I was in a society where talent wasn't excepted I would feel some type of way talent is good god wouldn't do something to us that would effect us because I would have did the eact same thing
ReplyDeleteHarrison ripped off his bandages and wanted to be free of what society told him to be he stood against society for what he believe was right was it safe no but was it worth it yes because even though he was killed he died happy and free that's what makes it worth it your happiness is everything he was talented and had to be someone he was not because society to him to that's not fair if I was him I would do the same thing because I myself am talented I don't like to be homely I want to be striking because talent is good god gave us talents to show the world not to hide them because someone lacks them I would have did what he did and even more because my happiness it what matters to me most and if rather die happy and heard than silent and not heard knowing that I'm truly not happy talent is what make you different and stand out be yourself and your own individual don't be like someone else because someone says you have to be so be like Harrison and break that ear peace and be you talent different and happy
ReplyDeleteHarrison is described in the short story as a seven foot and three pound man , but he is confined in a society that does not allow him to be himself because , they want people to be equal. Harrison reacted to being oppressed by destroying the weights that he had and then destroying his glasses. He also freed the ballerina who volunteered to dance with him and also the musicians were also freed. I think the main goal for Harrison doing this was to disobeing the government and also to free himself and others from the oppressed society they were forced to call normal and home. I personally feel like what Harrison did was worth it and yet I feel like It was not worth it because even though they did not remember what happened, because of the transmitters , he died knowing he was happy and free. if I lived in a society like Harrison's then I don't think that I would have done anything because I don't normally speak my mind like I should, and so I am like Hazel.
ReplyDeleteHarrison Bergeron was being handicapped because he was smart and because he was tall and athletic. He was very strong and when he got the chance, he used his strength to rip off his handicaps and broke free from imprisonment. He was extremely belligerent and rebellious on live television which wasn't a very smart idea. While he defied the rules the HG made her way to Harrison's location. Soon she bursted in the door and shot him with a shotgun. His effort wasn't worth it because he died for a cause which was still unfulfilled. If I was in this society, I probably wouldn't have done the same thing because (being so intelligent) I probably would have a transmitter in my ear that would defer any thoughts of rebelling.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded to this oppressive world by taking off his handicap harnesses and a few others so they can see their natural gifts. His efforts weren't worth it because in the end he gotten himself shot and killed and it didn't impact anything. If I lived in a society like this I would remain silent because I value my life and just show my wonderful traits in private doors where there isn't much of a risk.
ReplyDeleteThey way he acted was not called for acting crazy. He ripped his things off and other people things. He wanted to show people the real talent instead of just seeing it. It wasn't worth it because he took people lives away and the society didin't even change it stayed the same. I would of did a peaceful protest or just mind my business.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded aggressively, but strong in a way by standing up for his true self and wanting freedom within his society. Harrison wanted to do what was right or wrong whether or not the society allowed him to do. For example, the government tries to do everything they can do by making him wear those earphones known as handicaps to distort his way of thinking because he is so intelligent and strong. However, Harrison wants to be controlling by wanting everyone to follow him which means he wants to take charge. Also, Harrison responds aggressively by ripping off his handicaps and ballerina's to prove that they are talented in their own way than what they might think of them. I think that Harrison effort was worth it even though he took people's lives away because he took matters into his own hands by wanting to show off his intelligence and talents of dancing as an individual and not go by what others say or think. He did what was right to him and figure that the society will gain equality. If I live in a society like this I would have done what Harrison did but in a more influential and safer way of thinking.
ReplyDeleteHow Harrison responded to the situation was by taking things into his own hands. In the short story everyone was equal, meaning everyone was the same, no one was better or looked better than anyone. In some ways it would sound good, but for those who were better had to be brought to be just alike as others were. Harrison's actions were worth it, because not only did he die for what he thought was right, but he died trying to make a change for the society. If it would have been me living in this society I would have done the same thing, because these things were not right. Even if I would have died just like Harrison did I still would have done it. For example look what Martin Luther King did. If it was not for him, the world would not be the way it is today. That's why fighting for what's right is always sometimes the right thing to do.
ReplyDeleteHarrison response was very outrageous. I think he could have went about it a different way but he was tired of being controlled by the government or the GI men and just reacted I don't think he thought about it he just did it. I do think Harrison response was very outrageous. I think he could have . I think that Harrison reaction was wroth it although he risked other people life and wound up losing his own life because people in that society got to see what it's like to be "normal"even if it didn't change them or if it was only for five minutes they saw it and that's what matters. I would have done the same thing has Harrison because I like to do what ever I want and not to be told what to do so I would have gotten tired of being controlled and probably would have done the same thing.
ReplyDelete-Tayohna Gilliard.
Harrison's effort was not worth it because after trying to prove himself and breaking the law,he ended up getting not only himself but the Empress as well killed. I think he should have approached the situation in a more thought out manner.
ReplyDeleteHarrison Bergeron did not respond well to the oppression. Some would even say the way he handled the situation is something no one in that society wouldn't even think of. His effort I believe was not worth it. I would like to think that had he had large groups of people supporting him, then there could have been a possibility of them being "too much to handle" for the government of this society. However, it was definitely foolish of him to act on this alone (besides the dancer he was with). Like I stated earlier, if I intended to go against society like this, I would have atleast attempted to gather a group or groups of people to support the movement and in turn could overcome the strength or willpower of the government. In the end, I would have atleast attempted a protest.
ReplyDeleteIn the short story Harrison Bergenon follows a depiction of a future world where everyone is treated the same no mater how they look, what there mentail level is, or athletic stature. Everyone is the same by low and to compensate to everyones needs and so if you have a high intellect you are required by law to wear a ear device to low your mind, an if you are extraordinary looking you were required to wear a mask, same as if you were athletically capable you were required to carry around ball barrings so you were on the same level as everyone else so, in the short passage follows a man how was extremely smart, athletic, and had extraordinary looks but was taken away from his parents. So, in retaliation of this harrison escaped from jail and held up a news station and to no effect and was killed in the process, in my opinion was not worth it because i was suicide plan from the beginning. If i had lived in this society i guess I would not know how to feel becuse i would not be able to think or remember much.
ReplyDeleteIf I lived in this society I would help the people in need.
ReplyDeleteI would gather a rally of people to take off their bandages and masks. I would make sure we be different and have their talents back. But if someone step in our way we will put them in bandages and put transmitters in their ears to see if they like it.
Harrison responded by doing things, the way he wanted it to go. He snatch two musicians and waved them like batons so their real talent could appeals instead of talent that's equal and nobody wants to hear. Harrison effort was not worth it because he was killed and nothing had changed after his death. all the going back to being his self was not worth it because if it was he would still be alive. and the society would not be equal anymore. If I was in this society I would start up groups protesting on why equal is bad, first based on people not being comfortable in a society they can't be there self. So the whole community can come out and go against society rules because the guards can't assassinate everybody, they won't have nobody to following there equal society nomore the more stand up the more change.
ReplyDeleteHarrison Bergeron responded to the oppression by breaking the law and removing all the handicaps that he had on him. His efforts were not worth it because he died and left no change, people forgot about him right after he was killed, if he would've left some form of impact on the people then it would've been worth it. If I was in his situation, I would've done the same thing in my own smart and unique way, so I wouldn't get killed not Harrison.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded to being oppressed by freeing himself from his handicaps and convincing others on a television broadcast to be themselves and to be free from their handicaps as well. his whole effort was worth it since what he did was a rebellion to the rules that the government gave the civilians to be equal, but there whole meaning of being equal took it to another level. if I were to live in a society like his I wouldn't know what to do because I wouldn't want to.experience anything so cruel and unequal like that, it's not the true meaning of having everyone be equal with just being themselves.
ReplyDeleteHarrison wasn't okay with being oppressed and he clearly showed that when he tore the straps of his handicap harness. Also he found an empress which was a ballerina and freed her of the handicaps as well, and lastly he removed the handicaps from the musicians to and they were now free. His effort wasn't worth it because it turns out that he is killed by the handicap general so his movement to get rid of the handicap harnesses failed. Also those who are handicap don't have emotion so they wouldn't be able to have their own state of mind. If i was in this society I probably would've thought of away to do what Harrison did, but in a way that I wouldn't get caught.
ReplyDeleteHarrison was very angry and frustrated to being given oppressed . He felt like he was being restricted and wanted to break away. So he broke free from the weights and handicappers that padlocked him down smashed his glasses and took off his rubber ball nose. I think it was not worth it because now he is dead and the musicians, ballerina and audience only had that little piece of happiness. Also, Diana Moon did not show any signs of remorse because she shot Harrison. It was not worth giving up your own life If the society was just going to go back to being equal and no won can do anything else about because they are held back by the weights, mask and handicap. If I lived in this society I would stay out the way of the HG men and Diana Moon so I can protect me. I would do the job that I was to do and go on about my day. Lastly, it depends on if I do have to wear the mass or the Handicapper to even have the intelligence to break free last such.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded to being oppressed by taking off all his harsh handicaps, and telling everyone else to take theirs off. For himself his effort might not have been worth it because he was killed, however, the people in his society will now probably follow in his footsteps and take a stand by not wearing their handicaps anymore. Honestly, if i was living in this society i would pretend to be dumb so that i wouldn't have to wear the handicaps.
ReplyDeleteHarrison Bergeron was in a society that everyone had to be, "equal," but this lead to problems. Such as, if you were the same as everyone else then it was good. On the other hand, you would be fixed. Which means if you had good eye sight then they would lower the standards to everyone having bad eye sight. Also, they took it to the extreme and put mask on people who were prettier than others. Harrison Just wanted to change these rules and make society a different place. He felt as everything being the same it doesn't mean that it's fair. If I lived in this society I would have tried to make things different too and follow behind Harrison because being the same is not fun. Meaning it's don't show everyone personally.
ReplyDeleteHarrison reacted really unnecessarily. He was ripping his handicappers off and yelling, scaring everyone, when he could have handled it somewhat better than that. Honestly, it wasn't worth dying. He could have put up with it, or, just fought in a peaceful way, he didn't have to be so aggressive because that made matters worse. I wouldn't want to live in a society like this, because no one is truly equal. The people who are 'average' are honestly the ones who have it good because they don't have to deal with the handicappers, and the people who are too smart or too beautiful have to have all this stuff to weigh them down, so that truly isn't equal. And, no one can really be themselves, which isn't right,
ReplyDeleteThe way Harrison Bergeron responded to being oppressed by the society, was very flamboyant. Harrison snapped he ripped off the things society gave him to make him "normal". Harrison also ripped of the things that made the others equal, for example Harrison ripped off the ballerina's things to make he the best dancer ever. He also swung the musicians around when he felt as though they didn't play their best. I believe his effort was worth it but the way he went about it made it worthless. The reason why I say this is because I believe if Harrison would've went about the situation differently and had a different approach it would've turn out in his favor. If Harrison wouldn't came in there not demanding everything, and would've been calm then maybe everybody would've been on his side more instead of being afraid of him. If I lived in a society like this I would be upset because it's not fair towards me and it doesn't let people show their talents. I would be upset because I love to show off my talents and I love to be different. If everything was the same it would be boring you wouldn't have nothing to look forward to because you can't be better then your peer. Also I wouldn't like to live in this society because everybody isn't equal, they have people that get to use their talents and their brain to their full capability.
ReplyDeleteHarrison was very angered and mad to being oppressed .His effort wasnt really worth b/c it cause him to ripp off all his handcap stuff that was waying him down and to get himself introuble and indangeriong others while doing cause at the end he got shot and killed for not following the rules making it show what he did was really not worth it, but in other people eyes theyll say it was worth it because he stood up for what he belives in and did what he felt was right and the corret thing to do at the time.what i would have done is something like Harrison have done but in a diffrent way like i would got a group of people to sign a patition to over poer the rules they have and have every body voice the oppion on how they feel about it and show to the people that everybody should be them and allowed to be how they want and do them.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded to being oppressed by ripping off his handicap harness and the ballerina's mask.Harrison's effort was worth it because he didn't want to be like everyone else although the government wanted him to. Harrison wanted to be his own person, which was being intelligent. If I lived in this society I would have done the same thing as Harrison because I would not want to be like everyone in that society I want to be my own person.
ReplyDeleteI think Harrison Bergerson acted a bit crazy. Just to stay equal with everyone he ripped off all the things, he was really mad. He wanted to be himself, and I do feel as if his effort was worth it because he felt as if he did what was right and what he believed in. Even though he died. If I lived in a society like Harrison did, I would definetely be miserable because I know i cant be different. But I also would have did what he did. So I applaud what he did and it was definetely necessary.
ReplyDeleteHarrison's reaction to being handicapped to be equal with others was a example of doing what is right. He didn't believe in what was being done so he demonstrated leadership and courage by doing what the other people didn't. He stood in front of the people on a broadcasted event and took off the transmitters & he demanded that others do the same. Then he was later killed along with a ballerina that he made his soulmate by this lady Diane Moon who didn't agree with the thought of not doing what the others said . So she killed them and demanded everyone do the opposite of what he said. I think that it was but then it wasn't because even though he stood up for what he believed in, he still ended up dying with things right back how they was. So it's like he died for nothing. If I lived like this I would have made a different approach about it instead of trying to make a broadcast situation because with that it was more attention brought to the fact he was trying to stand up for himself. I would try to be a leader but not as outstanding like him .
ReplyDeleteThe way Harrison respond was crazy. He was tired of what was going on and he decided to break the law. By breaking his handicap things on and becoming free.
ReplyDeleteYes his effort was worth it because he was finally able to just be himself and not get hold down any more. If I lived in this society, I"ll prolly try to sneak and break the laws so no one will find out.
Harrison responded to being oppressed very drastically, and in a powerful way. Although it resulted in his death, he demonstrated true courage. He removed his handicaps to show who he really is, and what he can really do. Harrison wasn't afraid to be himself, and make a statement. I believe his efforts were worth it. I think this because he died happy, knowing that a statement was being made on his part. Also because, Harrison was being true to himself, defying the rules that prevented him from doing so. He succeeded in making sure that the world saw his ways, not as an act against crime, but a chance to not be held back. If I lived in a society like this, I would too defy the rules and be myself. This is because I would hate being the same as everyone else. There would be nothing special about me. All of my talents would be put to waste, instead used to better my life. If I was living in a society where Harrison was there, I would join him to free myself, and the people close to me.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded to being oppressed by standing up for what he believed in. He broke his handicap, by smashing his earphones and glasses against the wall and removing the things that essentially was holding him doing. In my opinion I believe what Harrison did was worth it, because it showed that he was not afraid of the consequences and he risked his life for what he believed in. Although what he did may not have been safe, it was what he thought was right. If I was in Harrison's position I may have done the same thing. It was not fair that everyone was "equal" even if they did not work hard, or worked at all for it. Harrison showed others that it was okay to stand up for what the believed in. Ultimately I would stand up for I thought was right, rather than what I found to be "safe".
ReplyDeleteWhen society tried to oppressed Harrison Burgeson he fought back in a powerful way without using violent force. I thin j he made the right decision, he took all the handicap devices that prevent people to fight back and chose to be unique. I think all societies should be equal but not too equal. We all should be equal but not have people choose how we express are own feelings. I believe that Harrison is a fallen hero because he decided to dance on television as a protest to change their society rules. He also did what Mohammed Bouazizi did which was protest to change how their society. Mohammed Bouazizi set himself on fire in front of thier city hall in order to protest the authorities abuse of power. Which started a movement called the Arab Spring. If I was in Harrison's society I would do the same thing because if I am intelligent why would I want to dumb myself down to fit others benefit. Would you want to make less money because society wants you to be equal but you work your butt off? No. So yeah I would do the same thing he did to fight for your rights.
ReplyDeleteIf I lived in a society like Harrison's it would be hard. I am a big cry baby and I need to be able to express how I feel. If I can't express how I feel then I would just be a wound up ball if emotions. Another thing that I wouldn't be able to deal with in his society is the not being able to learn new things. I want to become a better person the only way to do that is to learn new things and improve. But overall I think the society is crazy and it is unfair.
ReplyDeleteThe way Harrison handled things was unnecessary. Considering that he also just escaped from prison, he should have already knew the consequences. However, I don't think anyone should be killed for standing up for what they believe in, but in this situation, the character got out of control and was wrong for getting other people involved in something that would potentially get them harmed or in trouble. I believe if you want to stand up for something that is right and get people involved, take it to a extent where they aren't in any danger. If I was in this kind of society, I would try and play it more safe somehow (I don't know exactly how yet) and make sure who ever supports me isn't going to be in danger.
ReplyDeleteSince Harrison was so tired of being oppressed, he just tore all of his, the ballerina and musicians handicaps off on live television. I think his effort was worth it, because he wanted to show the H-G men and the people that we watching that he and the others were worth more than what the officials thought since the handicaps restricted their abilities, looks, etc. If I lived in a society like his, I would get a group of my friends and family members who want change, to help do a peaceful protest and make propaganda's to get our point across.
ReplyDeleteThe way Harrison handled the his oppressive society was totally irrational and excessive. He instead of thinking and plotting just when on TV ripped off his handy caps and took a power trip down a dead in. His actions were not effective nor were they worth the price he paid. All Harrison accomplished was getting his and a random dancers head blown off on top of that no one revolted and his own parents wont remember him.If i were in this type of society i would secretly work on my unfair traits so to have the same abilities as Harrison then stage a revolt with with enough people to take over the system. To assure my results i would even enlist current politics to help stabilize the country after the cu-data.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded to being oppressed in a weird way. It was good he fought back in a non violent way. but the end result was he died. He knew the consequences but decided to fight for what's right. I think even though he died it was worth fighting for what you believe in. If I lived in a society like this I wouldn't know what to do because its hard to imagine me in this situation. But I might try to do the same as Harrison with out being Killed -_-.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded with rebellion. He set an example of the things that he thought people in the society should do in order to be successful and true to his or herself. Harrison's death could've made a statement or could've been prevented of Harrison had back up. It was worth it in a sense of Harrison's death may've influences someone else to do the same as him but in a much smarter way. I think had Harrison did what was right in a safe way a lot of things would've wen t very different. If I was placed in such a "utopia" I would probably do what's right because I wouldn't want to live my life in an uncomfortable way. I would make sure I did what was right in a "safe" way to keep away the dangers of possibly being killed like Harrison.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion Harrison's reaction toward the society's rules were uncalled for. Everybody understands that he was tired of living the way everybody else was living but that is what made society "equal". His actions of ripping off his things were radical since there obviously going to be serious consequences to those kind of actions.Although he made an effort effort worth to take a stand for everybody, it wasn't worth it.Since everybody else in the society didnt have a problem with the way things were going didnt mean he had to make a scene like that saying "I am Emperor!". I really think thats what caused most of the havoc in this story. If I was in this situation I would have just went along with society's rules. Even if I were to decide to go against the rules eventually, I wouldn't cause a huge scene I'm front of an audience like Harrison because in my eyes that's just asking for something bad to happen next.

ReplyDeleteIn the short story "Harrison Bergeron" Harrison responded irrationally to being oppressed. Harrison came out and began trying to show the word what freedom could be like, seemingly without a thought. By taking all the baggage society had place on him off he showed his true self and how he felt life should be. Harrison began trying to gain support but little was offered by the frightened citizens. Harrison was very demanding and went about this plan all wrong. His outburst in the end got him killed and no one else stood by him and his beliefs, so his efforts were not worth it. Because Harrison acted so irrationally and without a well thought out plan, he wasn't able to rally any support within the society. In the end no change was made and the small glint of hope for freedom died with Harrison. If it were me living in this society I would rally as many people as possible and begin conjuring up a strategic plan. After a lot of thought out schemes I would lead them to basically where Harrison left off, showing the society how life should be. I think by there being more people and a more secretive plan that we would have a better chance at make an actual change in the society.
Harrison responded in an unnecessary aggressiveness. He should've thought of a smarter way to do so than go on tv and then get killed in the end. The effort would've been worth it if more people were in on Harrison's ideas and point of view of the society, he basically gave himself up but didn't get anything in return. If I were handicapped, I would probably go crazy, maybe that's why Harrison reacted the way he did. I would also try to point out what's wrong in the society and knowing what'll happen if I break the laws, I'll do it secretly.
ReplyDeleteHarrison's response to being oppressed was very extreme, but justified. To stand up for what he believed in, Harrison snatched off his handicaps in order to experience freedom. He showed courage because this helped him get the point across that he needed to be true to himself. He was determined to achieve that, knowing the risk of death. He wanted the world to know who he really was, and that society shouldn't hold anyone back, but push them forward. Because of this, even though his actions caused his death, his efforts were worth it. This is because he showed the world that being your true self can bring you happiness as shown by how happy he was moments before he died. Harrison died a free man, not held back by society's faults. It was also worth it because he accomplished his desires to be himself, and express how he felt. If I lived in a society like this, I would follow Harrison's example because his feelings were being expressed, and he achieved his goals of being free; something I would want. Also, I would do it for my God-given abilities. I would want to use them to benefit me and the people around. I would not want them to go to waste.
ReplyDeleteI don't got a problem with Harrison responding the way he did. he did for what was right even he may have not liked it he done the right thing. He wanted everyone to be treated equal everyone is the same no one is better than anyone. if I was back with them around the time I would have done things my way and done what I thought the was right. I would have tried to take control not in a bad way but in a positive way. to motivate our citizens to do better and treat everyone with love and respect. that's the problem today the world is messed up a lot of people think they better than somebody. if it wasn't for MLK the world would be much different.
ReplyDeleteWhen society tried to opressed Harrison, he gave up a fight, something that you don't usually see in this society without violence. What he did was right, however the way he handled the situation, thinking hes in control, was very irrelavent of the point of time. Because the way he expressed his thoughts caused it to his own death. If he was willing to save his society, back the way he it use to be, he should have started small and worked his way up to the top. Also in a calm a protest way, like Martin Luther King Jr. Yes, Harrison's effort was worth it. for example the time he told the dancer what actual dancing looks like. Since the society is so equal, they don't really know what a dancer looks like when their making the effort to dance how they want to dance and their good at it. If I would have lived in a society like this, I think I would like because I wouldn't have to worry about having a a low- self of steem or being jealous of other people because their as equal as I am. But, eventually, I would get tired of people not sharing how they feel about each other , not able to show/share your talents. And then it gets boring, and then I wont be able to take it anymore.
ReplyDeleteIn the short story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Harrison acted the opposite of how society wanted him to act. For example when he broke the strap of his handicap head harness & smashed his glasses against the wall, this was Harrison's example of being free. He tried to get support from others but they were scared & the outcome did not work how he wanted it to. Harrison acted without thinking. He was too pushy & it ended up getting him killed so no his effort was not worth it. If I lived in a society like this I would try to fight for what I want so that I can be able to wear or act how I want handicap or not. I just wouldn't be as pushy & I would have a plan before I "acted out." I would try to get others that weren't scared to speak up to join me.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded to being oppressed by giving the people an example of what they were being held back from. He rebelled using the one thing they weren't supposed to use which was their talent. He had broken the shackles that were made to disfigure him and called for a person who sought a means to end their so called equal society. In doing this he asked her to dance and displayed the best of their talents for others who were shackled to see. His effort wasn’t fully worth it because he ended up not being able to change anything. He was killed to be an example of what would happen if you broke societies rules, but in another way he may have riled up someone else’s feelings for them to disapprove of the cruel equality that they are receiving. If I lived in a society like this I would probably create a secret faction of individuals that felt the same way I do like in our book Fahrenheit and then when my force is strong or big enough we would dispatch on missions to dispel the evil ways of that society.
ReplyDeleteEvery person in this society is too be equal
ReplyDeleteHarrison was very frustrated with Being oppressed and handicapped like everyone else and to show how he felt that he tore the straps off his handicap harness. Harrison just wanted everyone to do what he do although what he was doing wasn't such a good idea, so he got what was coming for him which was being shot and killed along with a ballerina by Diana moon. She end up killing them both and forced them to put their handicaps back on.Harrison's effort wasn't really worth it by tearing off the handicap and headphones that keeps them distracted from the real world, he could have just delt with it more peacefully. I think that if I ever livedn Harrison's society I would have done the same thing to stand up for what I believe in instead if following other orders from someone else rules that I don't like.
Harrison's reaction towards being oppressed was that he was tired if living the saw lifestyle of others in society and thinks he needs to take an different approach toward be things. His effort was worth it because it made others try to take the Sam approach as him to speak out on what they think is right. It I was in a society like this I think I would try and speak by doing positive things but if that doesn't happen then take a more challenging approach because maybe that would result in a change.
ReplyDeleteHarrison was very angry about being opressed. I think he responded to being appressed by doing what he felt was right in his heart. He didn't agree with what was going on in his society so he took his hornesses off and did what he felt was right. He danced with the girl and he felt good about it he wanted to get everyone else to follow what he was doing but that didn't work out as well as he wanted it to. His effort was worth it if you look at it in different perspectives. Because one would think that it wasn't worth loosing his life and that he should just have listened and followed the rules. But some others may believe that it was worth it because he was expressing his feelings and not confoming with what others beileved. So he died doing something he had strong beliefs for. He could have been viewed as a good or bad example because of him dying people may look at the situation as if the society reacted in a bad manner and more people might start to speak up about how they really feel. Or it could be a bad example becaue of how he got killed expressing himself may cause others to keep conforming with society because they wil be scared they may be killed just like Harrison. If I lived in a society like this I would want to express myself but I probably wouldn't do it like Harrison because of they way his society reacted to him.
ReplyDeleteHarrison stated back to being oppressed by showing how people were being held behind and left back. In a place where he is not suppose to use his talent he used it to show his rebellious side and to stand up and make a change. Unfortunately he was killed for his actions because had broken a law, but maybe someone took notice and maybe he opened the mind of others to see what is going on in the world around them. If I were to live in a society like this I would think of a master plan and probably form a focus group of how we can over come. This can very much related to Fahrenheit because of the group Montag had joined to save the world. -- Bahsil Franklin
ReplyDeleteIn the short story "Harrison Bergeron", Harrison decided to respond to oppression by breaking the laws of his society. So that everyone could be equal, the society decided to have everyone in metal harnesses. Going against that rule, Harrison decided to break out of his and break others out of theirs also. I believe that his effort was worth it in some way because it allowed other to see that there could be differences in life and not everybody has to be the same. Everyone has something different than the other. I also believe that Harrison's effort was not worth it because it resulted in his death and someone else's death also. Living in this society, knowing that I like to show my abilities, I probably would've did the same thing but also in a more safe manner or not publicly allowing others to know. I also know that I would have pulled others into it knowing that they would be punished also.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded to being oppressed by basically snapping. Harrison showed that he was tired of all the unnecessary cruel rules. Harrison tore off his weights and his mask and danced freely (something that is prohibited in the society). I don't think his effort was worth it because in the end he still got killed and society moved along like nothing ever happened. All the smart people continued to lose their train of thought, the pretty people still had to wear hideous masks, and talented people had to continue to wear weights. His actions didn't do anything, but get him killed (sadly). I don't know what I have done to be honest because if you were to do something that was considered against the rules you could end up like Harrison, but if you just sit back and do nothing then you'd just live a terrible life. Its pretty much a double edged sword in my opinion and its too hard of a decision for me. But I have to choose so I would probably just have done nothing only because I wouldn't have been able to think for myself. Im sure if I were in this society I may have been considered as "intelligent" so I may have had to wear the shocker in my ear. I probably would have just lived in the society like everyone else becomes I wouldn't been able to do anything.
ReplyDeleteI think Harrison's response was unnecessary. I understand that he wanted to show everyone how he felt but, he could've done it in a nicer way. He was very demanding. His actions weren't worth it, he lost his life. If he wanted to get other people involved in his little plan, he should've thought of a way that him or the others wouldn't get put in danger. If I lived in a society like this, I would have started a protest with a group of other citizens that felt the same way as me. I think Harrison should've thought more into it and thought about the consequences that he would've had to face.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded was very crazy he feel as if he was used because all the things he was promised to wear he didn't get in order to be equal. I don't this Harrison effort was worth it because he put three people lives in danger and at the end things still didn't change and go his way. I would've gotten a group of believers and protest in a non violence way and if it didn't work I would keep trying.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded to being oppressed by acting out. He went and took out the peoples handicaps and let them show their true, God-given talents. I would like to think that his efforts was worth it because of the thought of it, but that's not true. Harrison didn't think before he acted which just resulted in a mediocre attempt to save the society. The thought process he should've had was to think through that nobody would even remember what happen because they're all mentally impaired. He basically lost his life with no cause. He had good intentions but bad actions. If I were to live in a society like this, I can't sit here and say how I'd change this and that because I wouldn't. I'd be an average civilian of the community brainwashed by what society has told me and I wouldn't know any different.
ReplyDeleteHarrison didnt take being oppressed to lightly. It started to make him become stressed and fustrated because he didnt like or want everyone to be disabled or handicapped just because of one person, compared to where everyone is equal and you help the ones who are disabled instead of being disabled with them. His efforts was worth it to me because he got his point across and let the society know how he felt. If I were to live in this society I would feel the same as Harrison. I would want everyone to be created equally and I wouldnt want to follow a rule that I dont believe in or dont agree with, I would do what I know what the right thing to do is.
ReplyDeleteI believe Harrison was unable to keep quiet and go along with the strict society they lived in, he spoke up. He reacted and showed everybody some truth but it all ended too soon to be taking in and understood by the people. I believe his effort was needed, because he had to show the people what was really going on, how they were human, and how everyone was different. I honestly I think if I was in this society I would not have the courage enough to stand up by myself, but if I had a partner I would absolutely stand up for a change!
ReplyDeleteIn the story "Harrison Bergeron" the way the title character Harrison responded to being oppressed was wrong however it was also the right thing to do and effective considering the situation he was in. If you look at it abstractly then you might conclude that Harrison was being irrational by coming out and demanding people to listen and follow his rules. However if you look at it concretely you would notice that Harrison really didn't respond irrationally. He was however doing his best to express how he was wrongfully treated. Instead of judging Harrison and comparing him to past experiences you have witnessed or know of you should instead put yourself in his shoes. Overall his effort was pointless. The society he lives in was based on the basis that everyone had to be equal in every conceivable way. As shown earlier in the story people in that society has bad memory either because they had a handicap that was making them that way or because their memory was just terrible. Based on that information you can infer that everyone has bad memory, because there is no way for someone with a bad memory to get a better one. So after all he did everything would just have been forgotten, rendering it pointless. If I was to live in this society I would have sadly behaved just like Harrison's father George. After growing up in a society like this with parents who as well grew up the same way then you would learn at a young age not to do anything that would cause others to be jealous and not try to change things because ultimately nothing can be done unless some government officials decided to change things themselves. I feel as though I would have had at least one handicap and have a complete understanding of whats right and whats wrong in this society meaning I wouldn't have done anything like Harrison did.
ReplyDeleteI think Harrison shouldn't have got killed. I think she couldn't handled that in a different way maybe negoiate with the society about letting them express themselves. I believe Harrison could've been more leant about the way he approach the situation and keep secret so that she wouldn't know. I think I wouldn't blend in this society because I would want to stand out. I would've did the same thing Harrison did and would've tried to had been the hero in this situation. Who know maybe the society changed after Harrison's death.
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded to being opresed by destroying his handicaps and dancing to his full natural ability.I belive his efforts were worth it because when you think about it how many people do you really think ever took a chance to stand up for them selves.Especially since it was on television it had to be noticed by someone who feels the same way.I think i wouldn't have done exactly what i did but i would of tried a way to dismantle the handicaps without getting caught so i could live my life normally
ReplyDeleteHarrison responded to being oppressed by just having an outburst of being angry because he couldn't show the better skills or differences that he had from other citizens. His effort wasn't worth it because after his death and performance, his parents showed no emotion once his death was on tv. The government has that set up so that no one experiences this things except for a breif second. So his effort wasn't worth it, if no one could remeber it. If I lived in a society like this I would slowly talk to people about how I feel and see if they feel the same way. If we did we could come up with a group that could protest the government and see what happens with the peaceful protest and more people might have the courage to join.
