Malcolm was always out and did not have enough time to spend with his family. In the late 1950s there were many expectations as a father. The main expectation was to protect his family from hurt, harm, and danger from society. Malcolm defied this expectation by putting his family in harms way. He was more focused on helping his fellow black Americans gaining their human rights, oppose to worrying about the well being of his own family. One example to support this is when Malcolm’s family was receiving threat calls. They would say things like, “We’re going to kill your family,” or, “Malcolm is a dead man walking.” This shows how Malcolm’s family was put in harms way. A second example would be when Nation of Islam members threw firebombs in Malcolm’s house. This indicates how much Malcolm defied his the expectation of a man by bringing in the dangers of his work field back home with him. In Malcolm’s biography it says, “Malcolm’s feeling of betrayal, combined with Muhammad’s anger over Malcolm’s insensitive comments regarding the assassination of JFK led Malcolm to leave the Nation of Islam in 1964.” Ultimately, the effects and cost were worth it because Malcolm X changed the world with his beliefs. He helped African-Americans gain human rights as individuals.

  4. Period 3-Shalese Reaves-Thomas,Naim Patterson-The Nation of Islam

Malcolm X religion impact his life by making him more mature and influencing him to help others in A struggle.
The Nation of Islam is a religion that believes that there is one god and that all white man is the devil. The Nation of Islam expect Loyalty, Dignity, and Obedience from all their members. At first, Malcolm followed those expectations, he prayed five times a day and gave all praise to Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm defied these expectations later when some of the other members became jealous and planning to betray Malcolm. Malcolm religion really changed him as a person. At first, he was wild and very disobedient, he broke laws, stole from people and committed adultery. Religion helped him when he was at a dark time of his life. Members of his religion changed his thinking to education was important, and white people are the devil. As he got more into the religion the stronger his belief grew. Malcolm impact on the Nation of Islam was strong. He brought more followers to the nation by street preaching and eventually touring the country. This impact was very great; however, he was still betrayed by his own members. They thought he had too much power, and was trying to become the Nation of Islam. One example of betrayal is was when he was silenced for 90 days for bringing negative attention to the nation. Another example of betrayal is when Banes accused him of trying to take over the Nation of Islam, and setting him up his assassination. Malcolm was so dedicated to his nation and he truly believed “The devil white man cut black people off from all knowledge of their own kind” as said in his Autobiography. The Nation of Islam had a positive effect on his life, but also had a negative effect on his beliefs. One example of his positive effect on his life was helping his people during the struggle. A negative effect on the way he think was him being racist to all white people.

  6. How the nation of Islam affected malcolm X

Religion impacted malcolm X's life by saving his life and making him realize that he had been poisoning himself in more ways than one.Claiming a religion taught malcom about togetherness and brotherhood , by making him understand that the will of God was what was most important. The nation of Islam expected it’s members and leaders, to be loyal and they could show this by sticking together, and standing up for one another the members also had to abide by the rules, in order to stay in the religion, it also expected them to fight for what was right and attain it by any means necessary. He understood , believed and preached the teachings of islam but when he became well known, he was instantly deemed a threat to the nation of Islam because the so-called Messiah betrayed him by spreading rumors. The religion impacted his life by helping him to become devoted to the nation of Islam and changed his life by avoiding smoking, he stopped perming his hair and stop associating with drugs. After becoming a member of the nation of Islam he got to know that he did not have to live up to the white man’s standards, also his view on white people changed because, now he hated white people and he made it known that they were the enemies. He brought them into the light of fighting for equality., and also when he felt that the brotherhood betrayed him he formed his own loyal group. His views on Christian religion was that it was a "master of suspicion", which meant that they were hypocritical. When brother John was arrested for no real reason, and the police beat him till he was in a critical condition,Malcolm X wanted to see the brother in the jail, but the police did not allow him to see the brother and so he told the police offices to look out the window to see the organisation that he has put up against the police if they did not allow him to see the brother who was in critical condition. There are a lot of people outside and this proves the brotherhood and loyalty that was in the nation of Islam, because they were ready to die for the brother even though they did not cause any problems. There was another situation, when Malcolm X challenged a preacher who was saying that Jesus was white. Malcolm used his knowledge of location of the place where Jesus was born to back up the fact that, Jesus was not white because, the people who lived around the place where Jesus was born, which was Bethlehem, where not exactly white but, they were of a certain color of black and so Jesus could not have been white meaning that, whatever the preacher had been telling the prisoners were lies. Malcolm X believed that African Americans were mostly Africans and so the only solution to the problem of racism and discrimination in the United States in those days, was for African Americans to go back home, but the only problem was that where were they to go? How were they to get there? but he simply said we should just go back home.To end, Malcolm X' s involvement in the nation of Islam had a positive impact on his life because, it changed his whole view on life as a black man ,Regarding the fact that African Americans were living in the mental darkness of slavery.

    Civil Rights Activism
Malcolm X was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was born to a half white mother, and a father who was a member of the Universal Improvement Association. In addition, his father was also an active member in the Civil Rights Activism. The harassment that Malcolm’s family faced, due to his father’s activism, caused him to become involved in the Civil Rights movement.
Upon Malcolm’s education career, he dropped out of school, because he was told that the goal that he had for his life was unrealistic for an African American. Due to him dropping out, his life began to spin out of control and he then landed in prison for ten years. While in prison Malcolm converted to Islam. Essentially prison began to change his life, because he began reading more, and turned his life to Allah. Upon his release he became an active member of the Nation of Islam.
Essentially, his active contributions to the Nation of Islam led to him becoming involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Malcolm believed in fighting for the human rights for African Americans before fighting for the civil rights. Although civil rights mattered at the time as well, he believed that African Americans lacked human rights. In order to gain civil rights one needed human rights first.
Given the fact that Malcolm was a part of the Nation of Islam, and followed the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, he was expected to be the radical leader. Malcolm was known for his violent and revolutionary protest. In addition, Malcolm believe that there was no such thing as a revolution without violence. Malcolm tried to advance blacks’ during the Civil Rights Movement by encouraging blacks not to back down to the white man.
Of course, Malcolm faced plenty of criticism from fellow leaders during this time. Many leaders during this time believed in peaceful protest, whereas Malcolm did not. Given that Malcolm did not believe in peaceful protest, this caused Europeans to become afraid of Malcolm. However, in black populated areas many supported his revolution. Malcolm urged blacks to become active by joining groups that would support the Civil Rights Movement and registering to vote. Ultimately, Malcolm has a positive effect on the Civil Rights Movement, because he voice was heard, and eventually led to a change in the nation.

  8. Period 3 - Sara Bien - Aime, Kierra Owens, Kayla Lucas - Effects on Society. Malcolm X was a popular public figure respected by many, who fought to improve the treatment of blacks in America. During Malcolm's time here on earth, society expected black men like him to fail at anything he tried to accomplish. Even though he participated in violence acts against white people, he later changed and began to gain followers of his movement, which proved that he could deviate from social mores. The media portrayed him as a overpowering man who had no sympathy for whites. For example, during a television program called, “The Hate that Hate Produced ”, Malcolm was called many names such as a hate messenger and hate teacher. By him being called names and a television program being made about him, it proved that he was very powerful. The government kept a close eye on him because was a very influential man who was feared by many. For example, when one of his islamic brothers was brutally beaten by the police, he forced the police to give him proper treatment. This proves that Malcolm was feared by many people, because police would not do this for a regular black man. Also, Malcolm saw whites as Devils so he did not respect them. For example, when a white woman came up to Malcolm asking if she could join his movement and help out, he did not stop to ask questions. He simply said no, we don't need your help. Even though this may be a bad thing, Malcolm thought of it as blacks have to come together before depending on another race. Therefore, his effect on society was positive, because he began a movement that gained rights for blacks that is still being continued today.

  9. Period 3- Kiyah Wade ,Keyshon Coleman- Leadership.

Malcolm X, was an iconoclast leader because he challenged society with his beliefs, he did not care about others hatred and opinions towards him. Some characteristic that can describe Malcolm X , is motivational, powerful, fearless, and firey. Malcolm X developed these characteristics over time, in jail where he met a guy by the name of Brother Baines, who told him, “I can see potential in you” he showed Malcolm the true definitions of the words, white and black. That is when he gained all of his knowledge and began to do research. Malcolm had many strategies such as, making speeches, marches, and telling the truth that he learned. For example when his friend was in critical condition after being beat and was arrested. Malcolm went to the jail and demanded to see his friend and he was in bad condition so Malcolm demaned the cops to rush his friend to the hospital. When he was rushed to the hospital, Malcolm and other people marched to the hospital and was protesting until they found out if Malcolm's friend was going to live. When Malcolm recieved the news that his friend was going to live he raised his hand and pointed and the marchers shut up and turned around. This shows the strategy of him using marches and the characteristics of him being powerful. He was such a fiery leader when his father was murdered the police said it was suicide, also the firemen and police watched his house burn down when he was a kid. That made him angry and showed him the reasons why he thought that white men were devils. Therefore that built Malcolm to become a strong and iconoclast leader.

  10. Period 5 -Titiana Robichaw, Ky’mere Norman, Edwin Wilson, Elijah Hayes- Malcolm X leadership

Malcolm X was a strong believing man who strove for the betterment of the black race by any means necessary. He was firm in his beliefs and persevered to get others on the right side of his faith. He later became accepting of the idea that blacks and whites could live together with each other in harmony. He focused on improving himself first and then others who were trapped in a bad state of mind, as he once was. He created unity among many of his fellow black brothers and sisters thoughts and views. He became a trusted figure by being recognized as a leader while in the Nation of Islam under Elijah Muhammad. He also established himself as a leader when he broke away from the Nation of Islam in order to seek better truth. We see his leadership skills really come into play when he was serving under Elijah Muhammad and he was called to do something about the accident that brother Johnson had gotten into with a police officer. Malcolm’s leadership role was established during this time because he was sought out by the followers of the Nation of Islam in order to solve the problem that brother Johnson was in. During the progression of the accident he instructed the group to stand together in order to become able to see brother Johnson while he was badly hurt in prison. He instructed his group to stay together all the way until they saw that brother Johnson had been brought to the hospital and properly treated. We also see his leadership skills when he went to a press conference to start his own group after leaving the nation of Islam. He broke away from the Nation of Islam, because his mentor Elijah Muhammad had broke his own teachings. He had went on a pilgrimage to Mecca in order to see the real truth about his religion and he reformed his teachings to bring people together. Lastly, as a leader he motivated the black race to think better of themselves, and to strive for greatness, and to become independent in their ways of succeeding and thinking. On this concept Martin Luther King Jr. was a supporter of Malcolm's thought pattern of motivation. Malcolm X was a strong leader, who was prepared to die for his beliefs, which were if he could be saved and better himself , than others could surely do the same.

  11. 3rd Period : Shanya Battle and Mle’ Barriner - Leadership

Malcolm X was an influential African American leader who expressed his own thought through his words to the Nation of Islam. He also used his knowledge and his large collection of vocabulary during his speeches while expressing himself to his African American brothers and sisters. Malcolm X used many strategies to when leading others such as remaining calm, verbally expressing his thoughts though his language and making sure that every person clearly understands what he is saying and does not let them twist his words to be what they are not truly meant to be. He developed these characteristics from the time he spent in prison. While he was arrested he spent time thinking about his life, he took that time to understand who he truly was as a black man. Not long after, he met Brother Baines that helped him open his eyes and get a better perspective on life. This man led Malcolm X on a path of aspiration and successfulness. Also, being a leader Malcolm X broke off from the Elijah Muhammad in order to control his own ideas. This shows that Malcolm X was courageous because knowing how powerful Elijah Muhammad was to the Islamic Nation, it did not stop him from branching off. In doing so, Malcolm X realized that he can be just as inspirational to the Muslim brothers and sisters than Elijah Muhammad, and lead them to a life of Afro American unity. Malcolm X was a strong leader simply because of how he conducted himself, he practiced what he preached and to that he never feared anyone but Allah .
