Topic : What was Malcolm X’s effect on society ?
Malcolm X had a powerful effect on the people of his society. Through Malcolm's words of wisdom and social capital, he influenced many to stand up for equality and against racism. At this point in time, society expected black males to be criminals, do drugs, be failures, and to conform to the white man’s rules and regulations. As a muslim, the society expected them to just speak about what they wanted to be changed but not actually act upon it. In the film, Malcolm X, Malcolm was told by a woman that he was supposed to do something about Brother Johnson’s beaten by the police officers. From that, he acted on it and a large group of people went to the police station to see Brother Johnson. This shows how Malcolm acted against the societies expectations of a black muslim male. An example of when Malcolm shows leadership is when the large group of people marched to the police station and hospital, following him and only doing what he says. Seeing the large group of people, the police enforcement allowed Malcolm to see Johnson after he demanded that he wouldn’t leave until he saw him and he ordered them to retrieve medical help. The police chief stated, “This is a lot of power for one man.” The media showed different aspects of Malcolm X. On one hand, the media portrayed Malcolm as powerful, meaning very influential. On the other, the media showed Malcolm as a prideful, cocky man who was demanding things. As an example, the brotherhood felt as though Malcolm was making it seem as if he started Nation of Islam because he was the face of the media representing their group. This caused some of the brothers to begin to betray him. At one point in time, Malcolm did not want any involvement with any white people. He thought that they felt as though they were superior to his race. In the reading, Malcolm explained that he thought the black people should find unity within themselves before they should try to unite with another. Once he returned from Mecca, Malcolm realized that all whites are not the same. Malcolm became accepting to all races as long as they were willing to help with each other but also willing to help change in their own race.

ReplyDeleteMalcolm X was the type of leader who wanted respect and wanted racial equality for African Americans. A leader is the type of person who is in charger or takes charge of a group or pack. As a leader Malcolm X speak strong about how African Americans were being mistreated, and the white man being powerful. The strategies Malcolm X used to be a good leader were that he spoke out against injustice, influenced people to stand up for what they believe in and thoughts. How Malcolm X developed these characteristics was first he bettered him by getting an education, which most African American men did not have at his age. You would not be able to be a powerful leader without having an education, because there were many things that African Americans should know. One example from the film that support our ideas is when he raised his hand up and everybody followed him. He was demanding and everyone loved him so his body appearance made everyone knew where to go. Another example is many people came to see his powerful speeches. His speeches attracted everybody's attention and everyone was engaged in what he had to say. One piece of information from the reading is when he went to jail and got his own education. He taught himself how to read and began to demand freedom, justice, and equality. Malcolm X was a strong leader because everyone loved and took up for him. He wanted to change the world and it eventually happened.

ReplyDeleteMalcolm X was a strong leader because he was able to delegate himself to the team, sense of humor, and ability to inspire people. During Malcolm X life he went through a stage of his life of converting to Islam. By this he had to delegate himself to one god, and that one god had brotherhood to follow. In the movie, while Malcolm was in jail he met a man that taught him that all black men and women are suppose to work together. The white man tries to use substances to stop that but, we should arise above it. Malcolm used this in his actions as a leader by praying with people and showing the right way to the Nation of Islam.
Another way Malcolm X was a leader because was able to attract people with his sense of humor. This is a leadership skill because this makes you relatable to different crowds of people. When changing religious beliefs again and giving a speech about brotherhood. This attracted the crowd who wants peace and community. They do not want to be against their own but help their own communities better. This just shows that Malcolm X has good leadership skills.
Lastly, Malcolm X has good leadership skills because he knows how to inspire people to reach a common goal. He used Black Nationalism to convey his message. I'm the passage it states"The American black man should be focusing his every effort toward building his own business ...." ( Malcolm X Reading 2). This quote means that this is a goal that all men need to be. Not doing the bad things that white people want you to do. Like smoking, drinking, and doing drugs. This is what breaks down black men. Malcolm X wanted to use this to inspire people to not do those things and rise above it.
ReplyDeleteMalcolm X’s work affected his personal life because it kept him from seeing his family and people didn’t like him and wanted his family dead. A mans roll was too support and provide for their family and Malcolm did just that. Malcolm stay in but still provided for his family. What Malcolm was doing was leading into personal problems like arguments with his wife and death treats they would get daily. Things got very personal when Malcolm religion switch and his house was wire by the FBI. In Malcolm X biography he said “ I live as if I am already dead, and i tell you what I would like for you to do”. The previous quote basically mean X knows he going to die soon but for a good cost, and he wants his legacy to go on. Malcolm X legacy indeed moved on and he’s well respected for making change so he died for a good cost.

ReplyDeleteMalcolm X’s work affected his personal life because he never really had enough time to balance spending time with his family and being an activist. At this time, men were suppose to provide and protect their families and to be there for them. Malcolm acquiesced against those expectation because he was not home, yet he gave his family a roof over their heads and they were protected at all times. He was able to do this because of the type of figure he was. However, his work did affect his personal life. Malcolm and Betty fought a lot because of death threats that have been coming to the house. Also, because he was a public figure, his family was at great risk and nothing was personal. For example, in the film Malcolm X, the FBI also had Malcolm X wired, so he could not make any personal calls without them knowing even between him and his wife. Another example from the movie would be when Malcolm X house caught on fire, putting his family at risk. Lastly, an example from The Autobiography of Malcolm X says , “When I am dead--I say it that way because from the things I know, I do expect to live long enough to read this book”. I think Malcolm knew that his time on earth would be coming to an end soon, but he would want to live long enough to read his book.
These effects and cost were worth it because he made a change and died for a cost. Not only did he do that, he made his family proud.

ReplyDeleteMalcolm X's Role in the Civil Rights Movement
Malcolm X was an Islamic African American leader who pushed and motivated people around America. He was a Civil Rights leader who stood for unity among black people and equal rights. Society expected Civil Rights leaders to be rude, violent, and to go against everything the media says. They also expected for Civil Rights leaders to solve every problem in the world and be protective of their people. When he was participating in the movement, he would express the fact that he would use violence when necessary. He also made it clear that he is only fighting against white racists, not all white people. He collaborated with MLK .They used to go on radio shows and tv together but they opposed on some things regarding violence and nonviolence. He used a different method, he always addressed racial identity. Malcolm described African Americans as the greatest example of oppression and were not brought here by choice. That was his impact on racial identity, that they’re not even here by their own choice. Malcolm X was a very powerful man that when a man got beat up and was in jail, he went to extreme lengths to make sure he got the health care he needed. This was a powerful action because the police was refusing to give the man proper care to cure his rough injuries. He grew even more powerful due to travelling around the world and giving speeches and preaching. This made him famous and widely respected. Malcolm X gave another side to the Civil Rights, as Martin Luther King Jr. was anti- violence, he opposed Malcolm X’s ways and vice versa. He left a positive effect by leaving African Americans to think of their true identity and him showing the world how people could gain confidence and eventually eradicate racism.

ReplyDeleteEffect on Society
Malcolm X had a positive effect on his society. Because he had much influence over the general population, he was able to influence them to see his perspective. Due to him being a black man, and a Muslim man, he was expected to be a pest and not very respected. Many people in the government, such as the police force had no respect for Malcolm or his beliefs. His views for whites matched their views of him. Whites, he felt, could not be united with blacks unless blacks were united themselves. He was able to convince many of this and to convert to Islam. All his life, white groups, such as the KKK has harassed him and his family. They also have burned his home, leaving Malcolm with no way to live. Many believe that he was a bad person, but he was not. His influence opened the eyes of many and they begun to fight for what they believed in. Something that they normally would not have done. Because of his influences, trials, and tribulations, Malcolm X became a positive effect on his society.

At this time black people were expected to be failures and never amount to anything. Malcolm X went against that stereotype because he is an important person in history. When you think of Malcolm X you also think of Martin Luther King Jr. The government and law enforcement did not like Malcolm. They felt as though he had to much power for his position in the community. He interacted with whites the same way he would for blacks. All Malcolm X wanted was for all nationalities to get treated equal. He had a positive effect on society because you opened the publics eyes to certain things people didn't pay attention to. In Malcolm X reading 1 it explains that he was civil rights hero and many people looked up to him. He will forever be missed.

Religion impacted Malcolm X’s life because it turned his life around completely, allowing him to see his beliefs in a brand new light. The nation Islam expected its people to follow the honorable EliJah Muhammad and to be faithful to Allah. Malcolm conversion into Islam changed him as a person because it took away his urges to do bad such as the use of drugs, stealing, adultery, etc. Not only did he get himself clean, he cared about more than just himself but others as well. The nation of Islam impacted his views on race because he did not want the blacks and whites to integrate. He wanted blacks to be able to do for themselves first before they made peace with white. Malcolm positively impacted the nation of Islam by his powerful speeches, luring others to convert to the nation of Islam. On the other hand, he negatively impacted the nation of Islam because he promoted violence.

In the passage it says, "I am for violence, if non-violence means we continue postponing a solution to the American black man's problem-- just to avoid violence." (Malcom X reading 4). This means that Malcolm wanted to fight back with violence rather than non-violence because it is not going to get their point across.
